Free Music Notes for Achtung BabyFree Music Review: Achtung baby for my baby Hit: 4 StarsIt was a gift for my girlfriend. She loves U2 and was looking for a specific title: "One" A good buy!
Free Music Review: The best by the best. Hit: 5 StarsEvery so often I go without listening to Achtung Baby for a few months, stick it in the CD player on a whim, and leave it there for another few months. This has been happening for 15 years now.
If you don't have it already, what are you waiting for? I can't remember seeing a Best Rock Album list worth a salt on which it didn't make an appearance. The undermentioned tracks, like "So Cruel" or "Acrobat" are every bit as compelling as the classics like "Even Better" and "Mysterious Ways." Not to mention that "One" is one the greatest rock songs in history.
Ignore the people saying how Bono is this or that and how annoying he is. I'm not sure what they think that has to do with U2's music, nor why they spend their time reviewing their albums on Amazon. Bono's been a rock star since he was 18, yet people are outraged that he has a bit of an ego. How do you think U2 made it out of Dublin? What do you think rock and roll is about in the first place?
Seriously, if you have even a slight interest in U2, or in just this particular album, it's certainly worth the $10. I predict, even, that it will leave you just as obsessed as some of the rest of us.
Free Music Review: 1 great song doesn't make a classic, don't make me laugh. Hit: 2 StarsHere's to the most overrated band in the history of recorded music. Boo, you suck. If Bonehead wasn't hob-nobbing with the pope or leaders you wouldn't have this MTV hype driven nonsense top polls and fool people into thinking they matter.
I leave you with an excellent commentary by the ever wise, George Harrison: "You know what irritates me about modern music, it's all based on ego. Look at a group like U2. BONO and his band are so egocentric... The more you jump around, the bigger your hat is, the more people listen to your music... The only important thing is to sell, and make money. It's nothing to do with talent. Today there are groups who sell a lot of records and then disappear immediately. Will we remember U2 in 30 years? I doubt it."
Free Music Review: The Lightbulb Hanging Over My Bed . . . Hit: 5 StarsTo me this is the best album in U2's canon, and my favorite album to come out of the 90s. When I first heard Mysterious Ways on the radio, I was dubious at U2's new direction, having fallen in love with War and The Joshua Tree. Despite my misgivings, I bought the CD and have never regretted it. From the distorted opening riff and garbage can drums that power "Zoo Station" to the haunting keyboards on "Love is Blindness", I was hooked.
"Ultraviolet(Light My Way)" is one of the best songs ever written in my opinion. The music perfectly compliments the lyrics. "So Cruel" is a beautiful song about a destructive relationship. "The Fly" is a great, driving rock song and "Acrobat" is a passionate plea for strength in the face of adversity. "One" may have the most telling lyrics written about the nature of love and it closes with one of the best riffs the Edge ever played. Those are just some highlights, but I truly feel that there's not a weak song on this album. There's even an outtake on the "One" single, "Lady With the Spinning Head", that's just as amazing as anything on the album, but doesn't quite fit as thematically with the album as a whole.
This album changed my life. It made me pick up a guitar and try and write my own music. It taught me lessons about faith and hope in the face of heartache. All that may sound pretentious, but no other album that came out in my lifetime has ever affected me in the way this one has. Most of my other favorites belong to other times and generations, but this one is mine. I really think this is U2's masterpiece.
Free Music Review: A winner Hit: 5 StarsThis album didn't strike me as anything special when I first heard it. I bought it for radio tunes like Mysterious Ways and One, but after a few more listens I came away with the revelation that this albums is very well put together. It's more complex and diverse than anything U2 produced previously, and is arguably their best album (regardless that Joshua Tree may have more radio staples). Yes, even better than Joshua Tree. Give it a try.
