Free Music Notes for Achtung Baby

Free Music Review: Shades & Leather
Hit: 5 Stars

Achtung Baby began the era where U2 went from earnest, socially-conscious Irishmen/Englishmen to "cool" rockstars who simply cared. They abandoned the mountain men clothes and bought some shades and leather. They left the desert, and put on dresses and makeup. Maybe one day we'll forgive them for that last part.

Achtung (Attention) Baby is U2's best album I've heard. The songs have more of an edge (no pun intended), and the album is more interesting than The Joshua Tree.

I'm hard to please when it comes to the idea of a "perfect album." Even records I've given 5 stars to, have at least one dud. AB is no exception: I don't care for The Fly. But as a listener and lover of music, I know that this song suffers from relativity. It sounds sub-par because of the stellar company it's in.

One is not just U2's greatest song, but the greatest song of all time. Forget Smells Like Teen Spirit and Billie Jean. One is the best. No matter how many times I listen to it (which seems to be on average 5 times a week) I get chills all over again. It is never a chore to listen.

Achtung Baby is great. It would be even greater if it were remastered. In fact, U2 need to remaster all of their albums from the 80s and early 90s. Then, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up War, and to listen to The Joshua Tree more than I do.

Free Music Review: Contains some absolute classics
Hit: 4 Stars

Although 'Achtung Baby' is without doubt an album of quality, it is not quite U2's finest. This album shows U2 when they were somewhat more raw, edgy and experimental and is a long way from the more cautious and conventional rock that has found its way into their newer offerings.

This album contains a number of top notch classics such as the anthem style 'Who's gonna ride your wild horses' and the fantastic 'Until the end of the world'. The latter containing the immortal line "In my dreams I was drowning my sorrows, But my sorrows, they'd learned to swim". However the track that stands out above all else on this CD, and indeed above the rest of the band's work, is 'One'. This is lyrically one of the finest songs ever written and is the song for which, above all others, U2 should be remembered.

The only reason this album doesn't receieve 5 stars is because of the unbelieveable quality of some of U2's other albums. For almost any band other than U2 this would represent the pinnacle of their achievements. For U2 however, there have been greater.

Free Music Review: U2's Best Album
Hit: 5 Stars

"Achtung Baby" is the best album by U2 and perhaps the best album of all-time. All of the songs sound as fresh now as they did 15 years ago. The lyrics by Bono are among his best ever, and The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen produced the finest melodies of any U2 album. There's not one bad song on the entire album. One, Acrobat, and Until the End of the World are some of my favorite songs ever. All of the songs mesh very well together and create an amazing listening experience. Do not miss out on this album!

1. Zoo Station - 7.5/10 (Good Intro)
2. Even Better Than The Real Thing - 9/10
3. One Listen Listen Listen - 10/10 (Classic)
4. Until The End Of The World - 10/10 (One of my favorites)
5. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses 8.5/10
6. So Cruel - 9/10
7. The Fly - 8/10
8. Mysterious Ways - 8.5/10
9. Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World - 8.5/10
10. Ultra Violet (Light My Way)- 9.5/10
11. Acrobat - 10/10 (My favorite song on the album)
12. Love Is Blindness - 9/10 (Great ending to a phenomenal album)

Free Music Review: Even Better than the Real Thing
Hit: 5 Stars

Achtung Baby is the album that really turned me into a U2 fan. I was fairly young when The Joshua Tree came out so my attention span for music was pretty small and that album was pretty much out of my mind as we went into the nineties. I wasn't really sold on Achtung Baby when I first listened to the debut single, The Fly. But by the time they released Mysterious Ways, I got they what they were doing.

The album starts off with the crushing guitars of Zoo Station letting you know early on this wasn't going to be The Joshua Tree II. Bono even lets you know on the song, "I'm ready for what's next," and so was everyone listening. But it was the next track that emphasized the album, Even Better than the Real Thing. It's funny how Nirvana is credited for destroying the self-indulgent rock of the eighties right around the time when one of the few introspective band from the era started to embrace the over the top persona of the rock star.

But even as the sound took a dramatic turn, the major themes of previous albums were there. U2 always writes the best relationship songs that transcend those of lovers to family and friend, and arguably their best is on Achtung Baby, One. Right up there with Every Breath You Take as the most misinterpreted songs of all time, One is more about a failing relationship than a loving one, "Did I disappoint you? Leave a bad taste in your mouth?" That sentiment is also portrayed in Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses and So Cruel, two more songs that really hit close to home.

As I mentioned earlier, it took me a while to fully appreciate The Fly, in fact it wasn't until I heard the song live, and hearing The Edge start the song off with the chorus, "Love, we shine like a burning star. We're fallin' from the sky, tonight" that I finally got the essence of the song and has become one of my favorite of theirs. But my favorite song on the album is reserved for Until the End of World. I was just beginning my era as a moody teenager when this album came out, listening to a lot of the uber-depressing grunge that was big at the time and the song essentially was making fun of me and my flannel wearing posse, Everybody was having a good time except you, you were acting like it was the end of the world." Now I know better than to focus on the doom and gloom so now when I eat the food and drink the wine, I no longer talk about the end of the world.

Many point to The Joshua Tree as their best work, and maybe so, but this was the album that told the world it's time to start talk about the band in the discussion of best of all time. It showed that the band didn't have to make the same record over and over again and could still make great music trying different things. The album even included the first U2 song you can dance to, Mysterious Ways.

Hit: 5 Stars

In my opinion, this is one of the best U2 albums they have released. The boys from Ireland were definitley hitting their stride when they made Achtung Baby. This one will stand the test of time...buy it!
