Free Music Notes for Joshua Tree AlbumFree Music Review: Little sonic improvement for remaster Hit: 3 Stars(Commenting solely on audio quality - I love the album.)
I hate to disagree with the other commenter, but the remaster job here has resulted in (at best) only a very slight improvement in audio quality. Where I think the earlier commenter went wrong, is that the new version is mastered substantially louder. Unless you match the levels, you'll be fooled into thinking the remaster sounds "better." In addition, the previous commenter was listening on an inexpensive mini-system, and had engaged an EQ feature (which, on this sort of system, is likely to reduce audio quality).
I did my listening on a pair of Sennheiser 650 headphones ($550), being fed by a Mark Levinson 390S CD player ($6000) and Headroom Blockhead balanced headphone amplifier ($4000). After matching the levels of this remaster against my late 80s original CD, I found almost no difference between them. The new version lets you hear slightly deeper into the mix, but it was a very subtle difference, and unlikely to be audible on anything but the highest-end equipment.
Upshot: keep your original CD, if what your interested in audio quality alone.
