Free Music Notes for PopFree Music Review: Bono, Edge.....to this album. I salute you. Hit: 4 StarsOk. Sure. The media dispised this work. And in turn, those for which are shallow minded persons out there went with what they read. Sure the guys of the band started to do weird things like dressing up in a radiation protection suit. But no, this IS an album to be reckoned with. Id say, the lyrics alone are Bono's greatest body of work since The Joshua Tree. OK, yes there is some industrial loops and other technical jargon through the tunes. But strip it back, and youve got something if not as strong, but maybe even stronger than Achtung Baby. It highlights the negative things that are happening in this world. And Please. Will God Send His Angels? Or will The Playboy Manson do anything for us? Or whilst Staring at the Sun, will this be our Last Night on Earth? Who knows! But no, it is sad what happend when this title came out. Because it deserved alot more than what it got.
Free Music Review: Gets Better With Age Hit: 5 StarsAs many reviewers have noted, this album was not well recieived when it was first released back in 1997. However, with the passing of almost ten years and with the band's return to a more melodic style, this album can now be seen as a fitting and ingenious culmination to a period of musical innovation and experimentation that very few bands will ever experience. I know that all of the U2 haters out there will disagree with me. But, if you ever get the chance, take the time to sit down and listen to The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop uninterrupted and in that order. The musical and cultural evolution the band experiences over the course of these albums is amazing.
Pop itself is a musically and lyrically brilliant. It is not as accessible as many other U2 albums but grows on you as you listen to it. For me, the album's highlights are too numerous to mention. I simply recommend that you go out and buy it.
Free Music Review: Raw, but terrific Hit: 5 StarsGive this album a try; ignore what the critics and other reviewers have said. I popped this baby in my pc and let it play randomly, IMO the only way to listen to it. The first four songs seemed to fit my mood perfectly, Velvet Dress, Playboy Mansion, Please, and IGWSHA. U2 has always been about the passion, honesty, and pure humanity in their music (example, watch a live "Streets" and try not to be moved!) Believe me, this album will not disappoint.
Free Music Review: Ragged, creative and crazy Hit: 5 StarsOkay all fans of Pop by U2 have to concede that we're in the minority when praising the quality of this work. But no matter how many U2 songs I hear, Pop is still by far my favourite U2 record.
There is something completely and wonderfully ridiculous about Pop that makes it stand out. Other U2 records to my ears always seem a little tame. The band has developed a signature sound over the years and that style can often box them in. On records like War, The Joshua Tree, All That You Can't Leave Behind, U2 seem limited, on Pop those limits are pushed aside but the songs hold on to an organic quality. These are still U2 pop rock songs, but they're like the black sheep of the U2 family, that when looked at more closely are far more interesting then the well-known and over hyped hits.
The classic example of this is If God Will Send His Angels where Bono's lyrics jump from poignant to ridiculous (it's the stuff of country songs). The song has a depth that is undeniable yet has a silliness that is unmistakable whenever you think of the blind actually leading the blond. It is this lack of a balancing act that makes you love (or hate) Pop, as the usual filter that cleans up U2 isn't there. A song like Mofo after all could never be included on any other U2 record as its sheer audacity wallops you as an electronic rumbling introduces a track that flies out of control into something that while not rock n roll contains the most rock n roll attitude of any U2 track I've heard (you have to hear it to understand).
It is this take no prisoners approach to tracks like Mofo, Gone and Last Night On Earth that make Pop a unique electro rock listen that seems gleeful, as if Bono and company knew they weren't creating a masterpiece, but just didn't care. The end result is a ragged, creative and crazy work whose fans will concede is not as popular as other records but definitely one of the band's most fun collections of song.
Free Music Review: The richest U2 treasure in my collection Hit: 5 StarsMany words have been written, sadly, most of them blindly influenced by the stupid band's behaviour of bashing Pop and prasing ATYCLB as a "return to form", "classic U2", or whatever.
Don't let the commercial machine fool you. Both in ATYCLB and HTAAB you can feel the painful hurry as to take away the name from Pop. Pointless radio hit numbers, dreadful songwriting, canned FM pop oriented (emtpy, predictable, cheap and unimaginative) production, selling out attitue, truly unnecesary and albums which the band failed in copying the Joshua Tree formula, really.
Well, let's go back to POP. This album is genius. Dark and conceptual, Pop delves into the vast regions of the human brain leaving lots up to the imagination of the listener.
Pop is the last U2 album with outstanding lyrics, aggressive and innovative sound. Unlike the twin albums ATYCLB and HTDAAB, this work is indispensable and unique. Please is the last best song the band wrote. Also cuts like Mofo are quintessential U2 at their most experimental and exquisite. Staring At The sun, Gone, Discotheque, Last Night On Earth, etc. EVERY single song is unique and totally different than the others, but the album displays an awesome union and the most orgasmic marriage between electronica, dark and sublime rock.
Guitars are the heaviest Edge has ever played, saturated loops and rythms dominate the first 3 songs. Consistent balance between hard songs and soft ones. By the way, this is by far the most rocker U2 album since their early days on Pop or War. Beautiful and deep songs are presented here as well, like If God Will Send His Angels, Please or Wake Up Dead Man
Pop is definitely their finest creative suite. As Radiohead will never make any better than OK Computer no matter how hard they'll try, U2 won't release any better than Pop, the most haunting and indisputably U2 album ever.
