Free Music Notes for PopFree Music Review: A good attempt at experimenting Hit: 4 StarsOverall I would say that Pop was a good album. Bono himself said that the music on that album was among the best that they ever wrote but some tracks needed to be a bit more polished. To some extent, I agree with him, but I do like a lot of the songs.
"Gone" and "The Last Night on Earth" are some of my favorites on the album. There is some really awesome guitar on those two tracks...especially at the end of "Gone."
"Discoth?que" is a creative song...an experiment with dance music. I must admit that many people thought this was a lame song. I like it though! I think that U2 did a good job of using the technology available to them to make this very synthesized track sound good. I'm not so sure however that I liked the video where U2 is dressed up as the Village People.
"Do You feel Loved" is a strong track. The bass is excellent on this one. Bono's lyrics express the idea that sex is a sacred act between a man and a woman.
"Mofo" is good but sounds a bit distorted and rushed. I'm not quite sure what the song is about either.
"If God Will Send His Angels" has some great lyrics. The drums are great and at one point There is this soaring sound that is like an airplane! Cool stuff.
"Staring at The Sun" was a hit single from this album. It reminds me a bit of something Oasis would have written.
"Playboy Mansion" is a cool song that makes use of wa wa peddles. I love that sound.
"Please" is another good track in which Bono pleads the leaders of his country to help end the fighting and the war...a very strong well written track.
Pop's sales were weak. It only sold 7 million copies in its first year, making it the only "comercial failure" in U2's repetoire. This album was loooooong awaited and anticipated. Despite the fact that "Pop" was good, I don't think that people felt satisfied with it.
Free Music Review: U2's brilliant techno/pop album Hit: 5 StarsWhen Pop was released in 1997 the album recieved mixed reviews from the critics and public. Sales were pretty good but not up to the high standards of U2. I for one, thought this album was brilliant. Almost every song is a hit and my personal favorite is "Do You Feel Loved." I think that it was great for U2 to go experimental in a couple of studio albums because now we know how versatile U2 truly are. Pop was described as a techno-pop album and I think that, that resulted in very atmospheric beats to go along with Bono's great vocals. Below is a list of the songs and my ratings.
1. Discotheque - 8.5/10 (Great Intro)
2. Do You Feel Loved - 10/10 (Favorite Song on the CD)
3. Mofo - 7/10 (Great Beat)
4. If God Will Send His Angels - 10/10 (Another Classic)
5. Staring At The Sun - 9.5/10
6. Last Night On Earth - 8.5/10
7. Gone - 9/10
8. Miami - 6.5/10
9. The Playboy Mansion - 7/10
10. If You Wear That Velvet Dress - 6/10 (Weakest Song)
11. Please - 9/10
12. Wake Up Dead Man - 8.5/10 (great ending to a great CD)
Free Music Review: ONE OF U2'S BEST... A MASTERPIECE OF EXPERIMENTATION Hit: 4 StarsSO I AM A PRETTY SOLID U2 FAN AND ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS THAT POP IS AMAZING...ITS FUNKY, ELECRTONICA, SOMBER BUT YET UP BEAT... THERE ARE SOME BLUES UNDERTONES AND BONOS VOICE COMPLETES THIS MASTERPIECE...MUCH LIKE ZOOROPA (MY OTHER FAV U2 CD) THEY STEP OUT OF THEIR TYPICAL AND EXPERIMENT WITH A NEW SOUND... ITS A GREAT ALL THE WAY THRU CD AND EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A U2 FAN YOU SHOULD PICK UP POP AND ZOOROPA... GOOD MUZIK IS GOOD MUZIK AND THIS IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS U2 GETS
Free Music Review: Don't be dissuaded by popular criticism Hit: 4 StarsConstantly overlooked as just frivolous experimentation, however the tracks are strong in their own right, and come together as a surprisingly complete package. This is not a marginal album; it's a highlight and milestone for U2. It's not their most polished production but ambitious and essential just the same. A stretch for a band many would prefer to corner into a certain genre.
Free Music Review: The funkiest album by U2 Hit: 5 StarsWell it seems that this album was misunderstood as it did not sell as much as the more recent ones, but I have to admit that I think that it is much better than what U2 did in the 2000's.
Actually POP is FUN, enjoyable, full of inventions (MOFO, DISCOTHEQUE), full of emotion (WAKE UP DEAD MAN)... Sure there are a few songs that are not that great, but overall this is a really good U2 album.
