Free Music Notes for The Best of 1980-1990Free Music Review: A Good Sampler Hit: 4 StarsThis is a good sampler of U2's earlier work. It is not complete enough to satisfy a hard core fan, but it probably doesn't need to do so. Those fans probably already own several of the earlier albums.
This really should have probably been a two disk compilation. At least two of the great songs were shortened on this version: 'New Year's Day' and 'Where the Streets Have No Name'. There are also some songs that were not included at all. In fact, there were no cuts from 'October' which was an excellent album.
This isn't a bad start to a U2 collection. However, if you like them, you will undoubtedly want more.
Free Music Review: Where is Gloria? An exercise in ax grinding Hit: 3 StarsMan, this album bugs me. Not that the songs aren't great (they are) and not because there are some understandable omissions (great bands are never able to fit all the deserving songs on a single disc). This album gets under my skin because they completely ignore the October record.
When U2 were building their US fan base in the early 80's, MTV played the heck out of Gloria; it was a great song. The whole October album is pretty darned good and to pretend it never existed is baffling. When you remember that this collection was originally released as a double CD with a second disc of B-sides, it just adds insult to injury.
1- I will Follow
2- Gloria
3- Sunday Bloody Sunday
4- New Year's Day
5- Pride ( in the name of love )
6- The Unforgettable Fire
7- Bad
8- Bullet The Blue Sky
9- Running To Stand Still
10-Where The Streets Have No Name
11-I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
12-With Or Without You
13-Desire
14-When Love Comes To Town
15-Angel Of Harlem
16-All I Want Is You
Free Music Review: Pretty good... could have been even better Hit: 4 Stars
Well, first of all: to all those freaks whom think this sold out U2 2000 is "back to their roots", you must listen to this seriously. Is there any Bad, any With or Without You, any Sunday Bloody Sunday, any All I Want Is You in their 2000 commercials ?... do I have to say the word ?
Ok, let's go to the compilation. It's fairly good, really...but it lacks something: it's just 65 minutes long. So they could have put 2 more songs on it !!!.
Which songs could have been ?. A hard question, but I think they should have put Gloria ( because there's nothing from October here, except the hidden track after All I Want Is You ) and probably a Joshua Tree one as One Tree Hill, Running To Stand Still or In God's Country.
It's a good compilation anyway, far better than the spoiled "best of" 1990 - 2000.
If you're a casual fan, start with this one plus Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop. Don't even listen to U2 2000, don't waste your time. Also don't buy The best of 1990 - 2000.
Free Music Review: U2 Rocks Hit: 5 StarsI've always been a fan, since the War and Boy days, so it is safe to say this will be a positive review. For a collection cd, this is great - it's got some smaller songs that used to slip through the cracks (Sweetest Thing) and the powerhouses "New Year's Day", "Pride", "In the Name of Love" and my favorite, "Bad". This is a good cd to have in your car; gives enough representation from each cd.
