Free Music Notes for The Best of 1980-1990Free Music Review: The Best of Early U2 Compilation 1980-1989 Hit: 5 StarsThis 15 track compilation consists of some of the better U2 songs and the most well known and a sure bet is this album is definitely the 'Best Of' compilation. Different people will have different tastes however many U2 fans or fans of solid rock'n'roll should enjoy this album that is a sojourn into memory lane. Songs like 'Pride', 'With Or Without You' and 'New Year's Day' start the album and show why U2 became a much sought after band by 1984. This is a journey into the early music of this Irish band from Dublin. With a crisp song in 'Where The Streets Have No Name' midway into the album shows the beautiful softness Bono can sing too. U2 have been at the forefront of many social and political topics and can easily create a song based on these issues and for the most part the songs are creative and immensely positive making the listener reflect. To round off this fabulous album, U2 included the romantic songs of 'Desire' and 'When Love Comes To Town' which are 2 great songs on their own.
This album is part one to the 'Best Of' collection. Bono and crew have excelled once again.
Free Music Review: Don't chop 'Where The Streets...' Hit: 1 StarsLike many of the other reviews, I don't agree with the track listing, as well. Four songs from 'Rattle And Hum' are too many, and the albums 'Boy' and 'October' are completely under-represented. The new single, 'The Sweetest Thing' is thoroughly disposable; it sounds like filler. And I despise the edited version of 'Where The Streets Have No Name'. This is the song that got me into U2 in the first place, and I believe the guitar lead-in and the matching guitar fade-out at the end are the most magnificent guitar pieces The Edge has played in any of U2's music. To cut both ends of the song short like the edit version does is nothing short of a tragedy. Usually, you would recommend a greatest hits collection to a friend who was just starting to get into a group, as an introduction to their music. I would not, however, recommend this collection. It is not a true representation of the beauty and brilliance that is U2.
Free Music Review: Even excellent can always be better. Hit: 4 StarsIt's a great compilation for the first part of U2's career.
What would have made it perfect would have the live version of "Bad" from "Wide Awake in America" instead of the studio version and the inclusion of "October" and "40" (live from "Under A Blood Red Sky"). The only other flaw is the edited version of "New Years Day".
When are record companies going to finally realize that music fans HATE when they edit songs??? It's a CD, for Christ sakes! There's always room!
Free Music Review: don't waste your money Hit: 1 StarsU2 were an albums band!!!
Buy the albums War, The Unforgettable Fire, and The Joshua Tree!!!
Trust me, you won't be dissapointed!!!!
Free Music Review: A CD for casual U2 fans Hit: 3 StarsI agree with the reviewers that found this compilation to be lacking. U2 is a wonderful band that almost always seems able to deliver the goods. Many of their songs have that indescribable classic but catchy feel to them. If only more of those songs were on this disc. Don't get me wrong, I like much of what is on this disc, but I also wondered why a few songs never made an appearance.
I think this best of album is perfect for the casual U2 fan who doesn't want to spend the money on a few great radio hits mixed in with some unfamiliar ones. Best of CD's certainly serve that purpose quite well. In my case, my few U2 CD's got lost and scratched and I thought this an ok substitution. And lucky for me, I am a pretty casual fan. So, casual fans can't go wrong with this purchase. Pride (In The Name of Love), Sunday Bloody Sunday, With or Without You, I Still Haven't found What I'm Looking For, Where The Streets Have No Name, and Desire are the highlights here. Hardcore U2 fans probably already have most of their discs and therefore should maybe consider this one redundant.
