Free Music Notes for U2 - The Best of 1990-2000Free Music Review: Very interesting... Hit: 5 Stars
This is a nice compilation of U2 music from that decade, and it includes several remixes that improve many of the songs. So, song by song, here it goes...
Even Better Than The Real Thing & Mysterious Ways - Great way to start an album. Two uptempo hits most fans would know. Interestingly, Mysterious Ways has a single alternate lyric compared to the Achtung Baby hit version.
Beautiful Day - The song that gave U2 new life after the train wreck that was Pop & the Popmart Tour. And it was released in 2000, so it qualifies.
Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix) - The first new song, and a very good one at that.
One - What can you say about this one? One of the greatest songs ever.
Miss Sarajevo - Bono's favorite song, and rightfully so, as it is one of the best they ever recorded.
Stay (Far Away, So Close!) - Another great one, a hit from Zooropa. Some of Bono's best vocals.
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of - The only other single from All That You Can't Leave Behind that qualified for this collection. Good thing, because it fits right in.
Gone (New Mix) - Possibly the surprise of the album! A new mix of the song is presented, with clearer vocals and other small changes. However, these simple changes adds a lot to the song. Pop didn't have many great songs besides the singles, but this was one of them.
Until The End Of The World - Another great from Achtung Baby.
The Hands That Built America - The other new song of the collection. Pretty good, but not as good as Electrical Storm.
Discotheque (New Mix) - Never understood why it was such a big hit, but the new mix presented here makes it seem a little better...
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me - Now we're talkin'! Possibly the best rocker they recorded in the 90's, and one of my favs.
Staring At The Sun (New Mix) - The one song where remixing didn't help. The album version is much better.
Numb (New Mix) - Great to see this song on this album. The new mix makes The Edge's vocals so much clearer (you might actually hear what he's saying now!) and other small changes.
The First Time - Another surprise! Never released as a single, this one from Zooropa is presented in the album version. A very good way to end the album.
Now, there is always that little deal with Greatest Hits albums. That is, why wasn't that song on there? Many great songs are missing. Just a few here...
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, The Fly, Zoo Station, Zooropa, Lemon, Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car (hey, Gone is on this album! It could have been possible.), Last Night On Earth, Please, If God Would Send His Angels, Mofo.
However, the thing about this album is that what is here is incredible. A great intro to 90's era U2 and an album long time U2 fans should get because of the new songs and new mixes. Highly recommended!
Free Music Review: Classic Cuts From U2's Weirdest/Wildest Era. Hit: 5 Stars
"The Best Of 1990-2000" is a great CD for anyone who just wants a taste of what U2 did in the 90's and it still has something new for the hardcore fan. It's a collage of some of the group's most memorable recordings and remixes of what some have considered songs that had promise but didn't fully deliver to their potential. After "The Joshua Tree" and "Rattle And Hum," albums that mostly explored American music like blues and gospel to stunning effect, U2 played around with flavors more akin to what's popular in the European clubs. Never losing their sense of rock n' roll, the band began experimenting with techno dance beats, a little rap, a lot of experimentation. Few artists have been able to radically change their image and remain intact, U2 did it because the spirit, the essence of their ideas and messages was never lost under all the gloss. This collection features the hits of the era like the sultry, funk-driven "Mysterious Ways," the epic, soaring "Until The End Of The World" with it's visions of heartbreak and spirituality framed by The Edge's rich, ripping guitar work. "One" is still a beautiful song, a gem that never feels aged. "Miss Sarajevo" and "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" are examples of how U2 can hypnotize a listener with the most evocative chords and words. "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" is a feverish, almost glam-rock tune that is always thrilling. The newer material like "Beautiful Day" still shines with it's sense of pure heart and soul. U2 fanatics who already own every album will probably pick this one up for the new songs and remixes. "Electrical Storm" is a dreamy, rockin' song that was a peek at what would come with "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb." "The Hands That Built America," recorded for Martin Scorsese's "Gangs Of New York" movie, is a powerful, operatic piece. The remixes are exciting and intriguing. "Gone," now laced with new guitars and an added Edge vocal, really comes alive with ferocious energy. "Discotheque" now feels like pure rock n' roll you can dance to, if the original felt too clubbish, this one is more stripped and feels more accessible. U2 is one of those rare bands that delivers a real deal, we get classic songs remastered to a sound superior to the orignal releases and new material that makes this a plausible purchase. "The Best Of 1990-2000" is an example of U2 at their best, for the casual listener this may prove to be the beginning of going out and checking out the band's entire catalogue.
Free Music Review: U2 Is The Real Thing Hit: 5 Stars
U2s second greatest hits package stands in stark contrast to their first greatest hits album. Listening to the two side-by-side, it almost seems as if they are two different bands. The discrepancy in sounds shows how this band are truly gifted musicians. The 1990s found the band sliding into the Alternative music scene with their first release of the decade, Acthung Baby. That album is representing by the brilliant Mysterious Ways, Even Better Than The Real Thing, Until The End Of The World and the heartbreaking beautiful One. The album and, in particular, One (which is about AIDS) showed they could adapt their music to modern styles, yet still make music with a message. Zooropa was their next and it really was an extension of Acthung Baby, but it moved them even more away from their main sounds. Pop was a complete move into electronica and really sounds nothing like a U2 record. Long time fans were displeased with the album and the press jumped all over the band. While it is clearly the weakest album the band has made, they should be applauded for not standing still and have a willingness to experiment with new sounds. They also did some movie soundtrack work in the 1990s with songs like Miss Sarajevo and the overlooked Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me from Batman Forever which is one of their best singles as well as contributing album tracks Stay (Faraway, So Close!) and Until The End Of The World to soundtracks (One of the two new tracks The Hands That Built America is also from a movie, Martin Scorceses Gangs Of New York). In 2000, the band returned to a more traditional U2 sound with All That You Cant Leave Behind. The album was universally hailed and produced the glorious Beautiful Day that won a slew of Grammys. The album contains two new songs, but it also has new mixes of songs like Discotheque, Numb and others. U2 is one of the biggest rock groups in the world, but they are constantly evolving their sound and refuse to rest on their laurels. Not all of the sound changes they have attempted have worked, but they are constantly challenging their fans and keeping them entertained in the process.
Free Music Review: True to the Title (U2's best from 1990-2000) Hit: 5 Stars
This cd is definitely an excellent and definative collection of U2 hits. All the songs are gems and each one has a style of their own. I am lucky to have been a teenager when many of these hits were created. For example,Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me is a unique electronica influenced song that came out around 1995 for the Batman Forever movie. I do believe that I was 14 when I first heard this fun song. The ending to "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me is very provocative, but it only adds to the brilliance of the song. Then there is the very upbeat and energetic "Discotheque" (the video to this song is very good as well). Other songs in this collection that one may find themselves replaying are: "Beautiful Day", "Mysterious Ways", "Staring at the Sun","One', "Numb", and "Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of". "Beautiful Day" is a very therapeutic and feel good musical track to listen to for activating your joy levels and as a positive reminder to enjoy life regardless of what happens externally. I personally liked "Discotheque" and "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" the most because these two creative masterpieces are musical tracks where U2 dared to push the musical envelope the most (with beautiful and creative results). This cd is going to be fun and exciting to listen to if you like any of the U2 songs and/or you enjoy listening to 90's rock/alternative rock.
Free Music Review: Maybe not for the seasoned fan, but... Hit: 5 Stars
This was the first U2 cd that I listened to. This cd is the reason that I have now been out and bought every single one of their albums. I see here a lot of fans saying that these are not U2's best songs and now that I've heard the rest of their albums, I agree. But when I first bought this cd, I didn't know that! I listened to this, and I instantly loved nearly every song. Thats what this cd is about, in my opinion. Its a gateway for new fans to start listening to U2. Its not a compilation of U2's best songs, Its's a compilation of U2's easiest songs to listen to.Achtung Baby is a brilliant album but it's such a complex album that it's not one i loved right away. Having listened to this though, I knew how great U2 was and I had the faith in them to keep listening to it, and pretty soon I was hooked. That's what a lot of fans who already had all their albums don't quite understand. They already know how great U2 is, they don't need this. This is a new fans cd. Thats why I don't listen to it much anymore, (except for songs like Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill me and Miss Sarejevo, which I don't have) because I'm not a new fan anymore, but when I was, I was literally listening to it all the time. This album isn't getting the reviews that it deserves. Thats why I give it a 5/5.
