Free Music Notes for U2 - The Best of 1990-2000

Free Music Review: Classic songs and awesome new ones!
Hit: 5 Stars

Well, I've read a few reviews on this album, and all have been either ok or negative. However I personally believe that these are some of U2's best songs ever. They're a bit more electronic than the ones on the previous Best Of album, but that's the normal course of evolution for this band. Plus, it includes hits from the 2 best U2 albums ever, Achtung Baby and All That You Can't Leave Behind. The new songs are VERY good, especially "Electrical Storm". William Orbit is a genius and it's great that he added his ethereal sound to this track. Other great additions are "Miss Sarajevo" featuring Luciano Pavarotti and "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me" from the Batman Forever soundtrack. While it's a great album, I think it'll suffer from the I-like-their-earlier-stuff-better syndrome, which is a popular opinion for second greatest hits albums. Look at Madonna's GHV2, another fabulous album that has been ignored for this same reason. I own both U2 Best Of albums plus quite a few of their studio albums. Maybe it's because in 1990 I was 13, but I actually like this newer stuff better...

Free Music Review: Better than 1980-1990 by a long shot
Hit: 5 Stars

I give Island and Interscope both pointers for assembling this U2 collection. The single-disc 'The Best of 1990-2000' was released in 2002 as a follow up to 1998's 'The Best of 1980-1990.' The compilation covers the period very well, spanning 1991's 'Achtung Baby' to 2000's 'All That You Can't Leave Behind,' you get a great retrospective of the period.

Unlike the previous, you get almost every major hit from the period here. 'Even Better Than The Real Thing,' 'Mysterious Ways,' 'The First Time' and 'Beautiful Day' all appear on this set. And, the sound quality is excellent!

But, just like 1980-1990, there is plenty missing. Where is 'Lemon,' 'Zoo Station,' 'Elevation,' 'Walk On' and 'If God Will Send His Angels'? And, why is every song from 1997's 'Pop' remixed? I LOVE the remixes, but why not put one song from the underrated masterpiece in it's album format?

Overall, this is a worthy buy for the casual U2 fan. I have really enjoyed this CD, and casual fans will too.

Highly recommended for any U2 fan. ENJOY!!!

Free Music Review: A Wonderful Addition
Hit: 5 Stars

The compilation disc spanning the years 1990 - 2000 is indeed a wonderful addition to the bands years of successfull albums. There are so many number one hits and so many songs that appeal to a broad range of fans, that it's entirely impossible to place all of the bands most cherished songs on one compilation. Part of the success of U2 is the ability of the band to appeal to so many people.

Fans may wonder where their favorite songs are, or think to themselves that they wouldn't have put certain ones on the compilation, but originally, the fan base was built on the artist's vision of what they thought music should be - their interpretation of music. These songs are significant to the band. There is a reason that each one appears on the disc. All of the selections are great pieces, and there are few bands to say that they are as successfull as U2.

I appreciate the artist's selections and take the disc as something that was intended to be shared with fans and enjoyed by all.

Free Music Review: Great collection.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great follow-up to the 1980-1990 CD from 1998. Chronichling the material that the band made during the 1990s, this absolutely is the 'Best Of' their 1990s era..well almost.

Several 'new' songs appear on this collection. The 'new' ones are the new song "Electrical Storm" which is awesome especially the William Orbit mix. The main thing that kind of throws me off a bit is the redoing of the singles from their 1997 album "Pop". While the redone versions are very good, they don't hold a candle to their previous incarnations available on their parent album.

On the other hand, "One" absolutely deserved it's place on this CD as it's one of their most compelling songs of their entire career. A definate classic for the ages this song is.

This is quite a well done collection. The 2-CD edition is the version I recommend over this 1-CD version but even this version is worth getting as it offers some new material, unlike the previous collection.
