Free Music Notes for WarFree Music Review: Sorry - Surprisingly inconsistent: Hit: 3 StarsU2 wanted to broaden their musical horizons and vary their styles. U2 does make a very talented and varied record with War. Instead of putting out the blockbuster everyone says this is supposed to be, War just finds U2 in transistion sounding at times confused and unfocused. Sunday Bloody Sunday gets my hopes up and it is my all time favorite U2 song. Seconds and New Years Day keep the hope alive. The next two are pretty good and I am still optimistic this will be great. Well my jaws drops when I hear the second half of the album, just horrible. Refugee is a genuine attempt at something different, but fails miserably. Bono sounds awful and the instrumentation is all over the place. Two Hearts beat as one contains no real melody that is complete. The rest of the album is rather forgettable. War makes a valiant attempt establish U2 as a band who will be around for a long time. This feels like they were not sure what direction they wanted to take. They would struggle to find their niche until their breakthrough Joshua Tree. I am a U2 fan and owned war, so get the album you will probably love this album. I am one of the few that just was not sold on War. Not a bad album, but I wished it was better.
Free Music Review: The 1st U2 Classic Hit: 5 StarsReleased in 1983, this rock classic still is as powerful as ever especially in today's watered down pop/rock industry...WAR is U2's first 'classic' album with the rock standards 'Sunday Bloody Sunday', 'New Year's Day', and 'Two Hearts Beat As One'////in addition any U2 fan knows the immense importance of a little song known as '40'! Bono and the gang reach heights on War very few rock bands have ever achieved...a true gem to be loved for decades to come....amen!
Free Music Review: Beginning of an Era Hit: 4 StarsWar is the beginning of the super stardom for U2. After this EP was put out it has been mostly all up hill for the musical career of U2. Great album, great tunes, and if you are interested in messages in your songs or not it has all that too. Not necessarily a must have but worth the buy.
Free Music Review: U2 - 'War' (Island) Hit: 4 StarsReview no.153.Originally released in early 1983,as 'War' was U2's third album and the one that more or less made them a household name.I remember the day this lp came out and the 'impact' it apparently had on some people.I think I may even still have my cassette copy of this relic.Impressive cuts like the boot-stomping "Sunday Bloody Sunday",the extremely well-written "New Year's Day","Surrender" and "40" deals with Ireland's political issues. The only tune here I never cared for was "Two Hearts Beat As One".Maybe it's just that I've heard one TOO many cover bands play it.A must-have for any and all true U2 fans and followers alike.Recommended.
Free Music Review: This one is a grower - you might not like most of it at first but you'll eventually love it! Hit: 5 StarsI'll admit that the first couple times I heard "War" the only songs I liked were the first four. After youve listened to it for a while, though, the songs definitely grow on you. I think part of this was because Bono's voice, even though it's pretty incredible most of the time, becomes a little questionable in certain songs (see "Drowning Man" for an example). However, if you listen to the songs enough then you begin to understand that it actually tends to work with the lyrics. The lyrics are about the troubles of war, and Bono sings, especially in the song I mentioned, like someone who's wailing or crying - it definitely works with the material given. Most people only know the two hits off this album ("Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day"), and while those are classic songs the rest are just as good. The lyrics are especially interesting, memorable and deep - "Sunday Bloody Sunday" being the best example, I'd argue. Musically no other band sounds like U2, and considering this came out in the 80's one can see how influential this album was. Bono's voice might not be for everyone on some of the songs, but those with an open mind will be able to look past that. All in all I'd say that this is another U2 classic and one that most people should really enjoy! Absolutely recommended!
Highlights include:
"the first four tracks, but the rest are good, too
