Free Music Review: A Walk Through The Past
Hit: 4 Stars

I like this cd, not as fondly as I remembered when first I heard it in my 20's. The energy and uniqueness of U2 is still there, and how nice to visit one's youth again from time to time((((((smile))))) I've matured now and so has the group along with with their ever changing style(for the better! ) This is a great cd to purchase if you want to know what the early U2 sounded like, but BEWARE!! They can become habit forming!!

Free Music Review: Back when they had something uniquely Irish
Hit: 5 Stars

I just have to speak out--for myself, I guess. I agree with what's been written here. This is the best, most important album of the 80s. It could be the best rock album ever made.

What really has to be asked is, why? Why did they give it up--a sound that they were pioneering (not alone, of course; there were others, but they were the best)? Why give up a uniquely Irish perspective on life and on world-shared issues? Why give up a sound world that was Irish?

It's funny. Van Morrison makes a career from American music, and succeeds. Elton John had early success in it. U2 turned away from their own roots to America, and haven't made anything as compelling since WAR!!! I just don't get it.

There are artists who lift up their own time and place for all to share--the local becomes the universal; with U2 this was so, 'til they went for the universal and lost much of their core (what made them the best there was). Now they're just good. The Amazon review at the top states that this album was the last before they broadened their sonic palette; I defy anyone to be as startled by an album's sound (by U2 or any band) as this one. The first sound is a snare and a violin, heralding in an Irish way the otherworldly bombast to come--U2 never topped it.

To anyone who says U2 had to move on to grow, I have two words: Neil Young. There, I said my peace.

Free Music Review: Play this loud on New Years Day!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

War is where it all began. It is funny as War is a strange name for a breakthrough album, but that is what War was for U2 a very big breakthrough, and 22 years later it is still their most political release, and is oddly therefore the bands most back to roots album, as some of the issues discussed were to do with British & Irish relations during the 1980's!!!

And what a way to start things off, Sunday Bloody Sunday, along with one of the most recognisable drum intros of all time (perhaps only second to Zeppelin's Rock & Roll) & it makes me laugh when U2 go on today about How to dismantle an atomic bomb as a back to roots album because Sunday Bloody Sunday, a song about the IRA British conflict is the most roots song U2 have ever done!!!!

Seconds is a typical U2 anthem, well if you can call it typical, I mean at the time it wouldn't have been because this would have been many people's first exposure to U2, but still it's great. Whilst New Years Day is a song to be played at every New Years Day party enough said, well actually its another song about The IRA & Britain & it was also the bands first ever top 10 UK hit. 40 & Refugee follows the U2 early punk influences whilst Drowning Man could be considered U2's first classic mid-tempo song. Two Hearts is a classic, great chours, one of U2's best unknown rock anthems. Red Light is similar though light weight compared to Two Hearts it's still great, whilst Surrender is another great rock anthem, I especially like the children chant near the end, kinda Floyd like but still brilliant. And I have to say that Like a Song is one of the best "songs that sound imcomplete" I've ever heard, it kinda finishes before it should, which is still kinda irritating but doesn't really spoil the album!!!

OK War isn't up there with The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby. But for sheer fun & quality it definitely deserves its place along one of U2's greatest achievements. It was the first U2 album I brought and it was enough to get me hooked on their other stuff so I definitely recommend this to anyone wondering what Bono & co. are all about!!!!

Free Music Review: U2 War - More of the best from this rock band
Hit: 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this album with some great songs as well as great beats. Many of these songs on this album aren't the well known radio sung popular songs (less 2)that we know and usually sing along to. 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' is a hark back to the sounds of an early sound of U2. Many of the older fans and followers of U2 will enjoy this album and the newer fans of U2 should also take from this album a new retrospective of this multi-talented group. Another personal favourite song for me from this album is 'New Year's Day', a ode to the New Years Day and eve. Two well known songs included on this release is 'Drowning Man' a soft song and 'Surrender' a romantic filler for any type of mood.
A must for any collector of U2 or a fan looking to add his or her music library with good music.

Free Music Review: U2's first classic!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Though not as good as Joshua Tree, or Achtung Baby, War is their first classic album as there are no filler songs!!!

A definite album to buy if you want to get into U2!!!!
