Free Music Review: Edge, Invite the Other Guys In !!
Hit: 2 Stars

This is Edge's album (his pet project)...He drove the recording process and initiated much of what can be heard here. The album was pretty much recorded between tour dates and it shows. Bono said that Europa was a natural successor to Achtung Baby (well, Bono gets it wrong sometimes). Achtung Baby was classic U2. I can summarise this album in 3 words 'Numb', 'Lemon' and 'Stay'...after that it is a non-event.
I agree with experimentation, but Edge - you just gotta let the other guys in (you are better as a four-piece). For U2 Fans only....By the way, the less said about the Johnny Cash collaboration, the better...

Free Music Review: U2 have nothing to be ashamed about.
Hit: 4 Stars

I for one think experimentation is a good thing. Being safe and doing the same thing over and over is boring. Of course, being different is not synonymous with being good, but Zooropa is good in many spots.

I give it 4 stars for tracks 2-5 and The First Time, which alone are worth the price of admission. The rest of the album is throwaway. They're not necessarily bad songs (with the exception of Some Days Are Better Than Others-which is almost unlistenable. "Your skin is white but you think you're a brother" is the best line in the song. I rest my case.) just mediocre and unmemorable.

Zooropa is okay, but I don't like the German language that is being spoken.

Dirty Day has good music and pretty good lyrics, but somehow it just doesn't grab you like you feel it should.

Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car also has good techno flavor, but the lyrics don't hold up their end of the bargain.

As far as The Wanderer is concerned, if I want to listen to Johnny Cash, I'll buy a Johnny Cash album. I buy U2 to listen to U2.

As far as the 5 I like. They're EXCELLENT. Lemon and Stay are in my Top Ten of U2's best songs of all time.

I love Lemon for that r&b flavor and techno beat, plus hearing Bono sing in falsetto is a refreshing change.

Stay is good just because it is. I can't explain it.

Babyface is cute. I really like the nursery rhyme sound mixed with the heavy beat that drives the music.

In Numb I don't particularly like The Edge's lyrics, but the music and Bono's back up singing more than accomodate for the asinine word speech. I also think this is one of Larry's better drumming jobs.

The First Time is a song of hope, but at the same time, sounds hopeless. Really sad and good. "But I left by the backdoor and I threw away the key...for the first time, I feel love." It could almost bring a tear to your eye.

U2's earlier great work should have bought them a little patience and understanding from their fans during this experimentation period. It's sort of like sticking with a coach during the bad years because that same coach led you to a championship during the good years. Success buys leeway, and I applaud U2 for their guts to try something new even when they don't always hit the mark.

Free Music Review: 3 Stars because of Numb
Hit: 3 Stars

Numb is a woeful song.
U2 lost the plot with that tune.
Zooropa is an inconsistant CD.

Free Music Review: U2's greatest album
Hit: 5 Stars

This album just barely edges out "unforgettable fire" for the best u2 album. U2 has been known to create conspicuous anthem-rockers like "where the streets have no name," "sunday bloody sunday," and "pride (in the name of love)." This album flies under the radar. If you are looking for an album containing alot of ambiguity, ambivalence and beauty, you must check this album out. In a nutshell "lemon" encompasses all of the adjectives i used to describe this album, most of all the beauty. This song is one of my all-time favorites. I prefer lyrics by bono that are less preachy and more subtle which allows for more lyrical play (like "babyface").

Musically, this album is really hard to classify. It has an industrial feel in "numb" and "daddy's gonna pay..."; a dance floor feel in "lemon"; a classical feel in "the first time"; and an otherworldly feel in "zooropa" and "the wanderer." But this inability to classify it musically matches the ambiguous lyrical themes throughout the album. Checka check it out.

Free Music Review: Faraway, So Close!
Hit: 4 Stars

This CD does not stand alone, but, at least in my mind, goes along with Wim Wenders film "Faraway, So Close!" The subtitle of "Stay" is the name of the film! The album is excellent and contains a number of the "B-sides" on the best of album.
