Free Music Review: UB40-Who Are you Fighting For?
Hit: 5 Stars

We saw this group at Ravinia Park in Highland Park, IL. this summer and really enjoyed them. Great CD. mbiskus

Free Music Review: A great popular reggae band throws down a great album
Hit: 5 Stars

It's hard to believe UB40 has been around nearly 30 years and still sound so fine. They have written several fantastic songs here, and covered a few other great ones. This is get-up-and-dance reggae, sing-along reggae, reggae of love, protest, and philosophy; beautiful stuff. Every song has good lyrics (some great) and every song sounds like a hit.

This is probably their greatest album ever, and I have them all.
Don't miss it.

Free Music Review: A Step Back, Though Not Much of a Step Forward
Hit: 2 Stars

Besides the politically focused lyrics the beats, rhythms, synths, horns etc....feel luke warm and familiar. There is not a single track on here that sounds like an anthem. The songs start at a mid level tempo and stay there for the duration of the track.

UB40's earlier works were most noteworthy for a song to go through multiple phases of progression, leading to dynamite "crescendo's" featuring synth solos or horn solos, choruses that made you want to sing! In terms of production UB40's earlier works are a goldmine of multidimensional richly layered tunes.

The production is totally lacking on this album.

On this album you will find the simple "one" "two" "one" "two" piano rhythm (on almost every track!), coupled with very basic(bland) & repetitive bass rhythms. The Sax is here, though it never shines.

Though if you are a fan of UB40's more toned down late 90's to present sound, this album probably will not dissapoint you. Because even though the songs on this album are not bad, they just are not that good.

Furthermore, in light of this album being toted as UB40 "getting back to its roots"....do not be fooled.

Simply put this album lacks the energy of their earlier works.

If you are interested in UB40 check out the following albums for some of the best Reggae period. Listed in order from heavy dub influence to more progressive/cross genre influenced works; 1980-1983, Present Arms, Signing Off, Geofrey Morgan, Labour of Love, Labour of Love II.

Free Music Review: No bad tracks but no standouts either
Hit: 5 Stars

When I found out that UB40 did this album I was initially skeptical because I was unimpressed with all their cross-over stuff from back when. On the reviews here at amazon, I decided to buy it and give it a try. Thankfully, the whole CD is really true reggae and for that I give it 5 stars. I'm not compelled to skip any song on the whole CD which doesn't happen often. You can put it on in the background and just relax with it.

On the other hand, I must say that none of the tracks blew my mind, either. The cover gave me the idea this would be much more of a message CD and instead its full of love and relationship related songs more than anything else. You might say its mostly lovers rockers style. Its mellow and melodic.

This album is perfect for true fans of UB40 but also of true roots style reggae. Its a good CD, but "I'm Not Fooled" will remain my favorite UB40 song of all time. Nothing on this album comes close in my opinion. Still, if you're starved for roots style reggae this is a good bet.

Free Music Review: One of their BEST !
Hit: 5 Stars

This is, without a doubt, one of their best albums to date. No bad tracks on the cd. My favorite tracks are: ONE WOMAN MAN, PLENTY MORE, AFTER TONIGHT (please note: the short version is included on the album - not the Extended VERSION which is 1:40 longer, and the better of the two), WAR POEM, WHO YOU FIGHTING FOR?, .....oh hell, the WHOLE ALBUM is friggin fantastic! BTW, saw them in VEGAS and they were unreal! THey are coming back this summer - august 2006 - highly recommend that you go see them LIVE! And GET THE ALBUM!
