Free Music Review: Two Stellar UFO Albums In One!

A great package that features the last album with guitarist Michael Schenker from 1978 "Obsession" and the first album with his replacement Paul Chapman called "No Place To Run" which came out in 1980.
Featured on "Obsession" are some of the band's best songs like "Only You Can Rock Me", "Cherry", "Hot N' Ready", a short instrumental called "Arbory Hill", and the excellent ballad "Born To Lose" where Schenker plays one of his best solos ever!
"No Place To Run" is equaly as good! It was produced by Geroge Martin of The Beatles fame!
Guitarist Chapman is quite underrated for some reason. Highlights abound here: "Money Money", Lettin' Go", and "Young Blood" are great hard rock numbers, while "Take It Or Leave It" is a notable acoustic ballad. I really liked the opening instrumental number "Alpha Centauri". That's the name of the Sun's nearest neighbour star that can be seen with the naked eye! Another notable song is "Mystery Train" which is a cover of an old rock and roll number that Elvis Presley recorded in the 50's.
These two are, simply put, awesome hard rock albums. This particalar release seemed like the best way to go but it's out of print.
However the "Obsesson" album has been recently reissued, as were all the Schenker era albums! Now it's available in remastered from with expanded liner notes and bonus live tracks as well. So my advice is to get that one and let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that the record label Chrysalis reissue all the Chapman-era albums!!
UPDATE: Apparently, keeping my fingers crossed worked! The first three Chapman-era albums: "No Place To Run" (1980), "The Wild, The Willing, And The Innocent" (1981), and "Mechanix" (1982) are going to be released in early 2009 in remastered form with bonus tracks and the expanded booklet! Although most of the bonus material are live versions, they will sound better than ever I'm pretty sure! Go to www.ufo-music.info to check out the new extra songs on each album!

Free Music Review: A Pure Classic produced by the Beatles' George Martin

This album shows how some decent material can be elevated by a great producer; even w/out guitar-wiz Schenker, UFO manages to put out one of its best albums, with tight melodies and songwriting, Phil Mogg's pinnacle as a vocalist, and Chapman doing an admirable and inspired job taking over for Schenker. It's unfortunate it was all downhill for the band after this release. Buy it, let it soak in, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The mix is a bit dry and flat for the bass, but it's punchy nonetheless. Letting Go, Mystery Train, This Fire Burns Tonight, No Place to Run, and the powerful Anyday are all standouts.
