Free Music Review: Lightning Strikes Again

Yes, once again fans,Phil,Mike,and Pete deliver the goods to their people. I have been a hard core fan since seeing them in '79 and have owned all their records many times over. I also had the labor of love(for years)telling everyone that Strangers In The Night was/is the greatest live recording of all time. Those are my credentials for this review. This is a very progressive and mature effort from UFO. It is the true follow up to Walk on Water. (Covenant does have its moments-Miss The Lights) Age could possibly and finally be taking a small toll on Phil's vocals, but don't worry its still Phil. The high points are too many to mention, but as you may have read somewhere else Someone's Gonna Have To Pay is killer and has the potential to be a true modern classic like Venus. I really appreciate this album and the fact that UFO are still going strong. Phil has done an AMAZING job keeping the band going all these years. Thank you to all the members who have had a part in THE GREATEST UNDER-RATED BAND OF ALL TIME. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. P.S.- To truely appreciate this CD you need Walk On Water.

Japanese edition of the hard rock legend's 2002 album. Includes three live bonus tracks, 'Only You Can Rock Me', 'Too Hot To Handle' & 'Rock Bottom'. Steamhammer. 2002.Sharks comes two decades after UFO's last meaningful hit, at a time when you'd think UFO would call it a day and raise a glass to the late '70s, when Lights Out and Obsession were huge and Strangers in the Night was being heralded as a landmark live album. But rock & roll junkies to a man, they simply cannot let it lie. And thank goodness for that, because Sharks is far from the pub-metal indulgence one might expect. Reuniting stalwarts Phil Mogg and Pete Way with old cohort Michael Schenker, as well as drum wizard Aynsley Dunbar, the album is witty, unruly, and possessed of a renegade spirit sorely lacking in most nu-metallers (a point raised by Mogg during "Someone's Gonna Have to Pay"). "Fighting Man" is a hard-stomping blues-rock, "Dead Man Walking" recalls Van Halen's take on "You Really Got Me," while "Outlaw Man" is a history-minded self-justification, complete with Schenker pyrotechnics and hilariously brazen lyrics ("I'm a rocker / I'm one big bone"). Best of all, though, is "Serenity." With its verses like an Old Testament rant and a beautiful chorus, it ranks with UFO's best work. --Dominic Wills
