Where the heck was I in 1978?!?!?

When Strangers in the Night was recorded (1978), I was 18 and fully alert. Yet, I don't even remember UFO touring in Michigan. They simply weren't on my radar screen. (I know there's a joke about UFOs not being on my radar screen in there somewhere, but I don't know where it is off hand; maybe I've been watching too much X Files lately...)

Perhaps in 1978 I was so into groups like Rush, Kansas, Yes, Genesis and Angel that I was a musical snob to anything that didn't seem deep and progressive. In other words, straight ahead rock and roll bands just weren't flipping my switches. (Of course, in my defense, disco was starting to rear its ugly head about that time and managed to kill off entire radio stations and drive many rock bands into hiding.)

Thanks to a dearth of great, melodic, well-played, distinctive music available these days, I've spent a lot of time re-discovering lost masterpieces.

Like Strangers in the Night from UFO, for instance.

I've gotten into UFO in a big way during the past 6-8 months. I started small (with Essential UFO and Lights Out), but quickly built up steam to acquire Walk on Water (a classic!), Strangers in the Night, The Best of the Rest and -- get this -- EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEIR NEWLY REMASTERED CLASSSIC CDS AVAILABLE VIA AMAZON.

And why have I done that? Because, quite simply, UFO is magic. And nowhere is this more evident than on Strangers in the Night, their 1978 live album featuring all of their very best classic tracks from the Schenker-era '70s.

This Remastered, "Expanded" CD version of Strangers in the Night includes two tracks ("Hot 'N' Ready" and "Cherry") previously omitted from earlier version of this album. (And previously only available on the expensive Japanese import; so now you don't need to buy that.)

My favorite tracks from Strangers in the Night include "Cherry," "Love to Love" (one of my all-time favorite songs from ANY band!), "Out in the Street," "Mother Mary," "This Kids," "Doctor Doctor," "Lights Out," "Rock Bottom," and "Too Hot to Handle." Which is just about every track on this CD.

If you're a fan of melodic hard rock, featuring one of today's most impressive guitarists (Michael Schenker, still WAY too ego-centric for his own good) and distinctive vocalists (Phil Mogg) and a ton of catchy, clever tunes, then UFO should be in your CD collection. And you could easily start with Strangers in the Night as your first purchase.

There are a few bands I regret like crazy not seeing when I was a teenager. Angel and UFO are two of them.

But, thanks to the miracle of remastered CDs, and vibrant, brilliant performances like those found on Strangers in the Night, I can now pretend I was there.
