Free Music Notes for Anchor Drops

Free Music Review: Prog Spring
Hit: 5 Stars

Welcome to the Rock Show. Umphrey's latest offering, and first with drummer Kris Myers (owner of a masters degree in Jazz Studies from Depaul University) is an absolute masterpiece. A triumph for a band often labeled a "jamband", Anchor Drops's progressive rock stylings show just how far Umphrey's has progressed in their efforts to eclipse the stereotypes of the "jam scene". Techinical virtuosos, the members of Umphrey's de-emphasize their impressive chops in favor of a focus on their brilliant genre-defying compositions, however, that doesn't mean that they don't bust out their maddest skills on a few tracks (see Anchor Drops, JaJunk pt. II, Mulche's Odyssey). What are you waiting for, get this album, and you won't be dissapointed.

Free Music Review: This is a GREAT album!
Hit: 5 Stars

Anchor Drops is Umphrey's best studio work to date and one of the best albums of the year, IMO. Great songwriting, great production, the whole package.

In addition to featuring many of the songs that Umphrey's has turned into such great live tunes (Tinkles, Mulche's, Kitchen, Jajunk, Walletsworth), the album features several new tunes that have never been played live. Check out the clip of the first track (The Plunger) for an example of one of these new tunes.

If you're a fan of any type of rock music and you've never heard Umphrey's, you really should check out this album. The band plays a great mixture of genres and many are represented on this disc. You won't be disappointed.

If you have heard Umphrey's before, then what are you waiting for?!

Free Music Review: See for yourself
Hit: 5 Stars

If your musical tastes fall within the boundaries of the so-called jam-band aesthetic, you probably have your own opinion on UM and don't need to hear mine. However, if you are just curious what all the fuss is about--give this album a listen (preferably two or three listens) and you'll have an idea of why an independent-label band from Chicago has developed such a cult-like following nationwide. The studio product can't duplicate the live show (wisely, UM doesn't try) but it does provide a taste of the band's impeccable musicianship and experimental tastes, not to mention lyrics and melodies that will work their way into your head after repeated listens. See for yourself.

Free Music Review: something for everyone
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great album that doesn't allow Umphrey's McGee to be pigeonholed into one genre. It is a bit more concerned with vocals than their concerts are, but capturing what an Umphrey's McGee concert is like was definately not the purpose of this album. This very well thought out album brought two excellent new tunes into Umphrey's lineup (Plunger & The Pequod) and one that still has to prove itself (Robot World). If you like progressive music, you'll love this whole album. If not, (I am sorry for you, and) you will find at least a few songs to connect with by way of your country, singer-songwriter, prog rock, techno, or folk guitar likings.

Free Music Review: live or studio... still great
Hit: 5 Stars

Umphrey's mcgee has emerged as one of the premier jam bands on the scene. Their live shows are nothing short of spectacular with amazing music and an equally amazing light show. Some people refuse to listen to studio albums from bands like this, howver, in this case that would be a mistake. From track 1, Plunger, all the way through to track 14, the Pequad, Umphrey's never takes their foot off the gas. My two favorite tracks on the album are the title track, Anchor Drops, and the amazing Mulche's Odyssee. Umphrey's will be at All Good Fest this year, and in my opinion they will steal the show at any fest they do a set at.
