Free Music Notes for 89/93: An AnthologyFree Music Review: Too many good songs to fit on a single CD! Hit: 5 Stars
To effectively sum up the career of Uncle Tupelo on a single CD is a daunting task, even though the band only released four albums and a handful of singles. This CD comes about as close as one can hope for, however, and is a great introduction to one of the best bands of the last 10 years...if not the last 50 years. There are some glaring omissions, however, so new listeners will still want to pick up Anodyne (for songs like Fifteen Keys, Anodyne, Slate, etc) and the first three albums when Legacy re-issues them (for songs like Postcard, True to Life, Factory Belt, Criminals, etc.). There really isn't a bad song in the band's catalog, so start wherever you can. But if you want a good overview, this is a good place to start. The demos of Outdone and the I Wanna Be Your Dog outtakes are interesting (especially for longtime fans), but are not essential for new listeners. The rest of the CD, however, is essential. Enjoy the ride...
Free Music Review: Great way to introduce yourself to UT, and alt-country. Hit: 5 Stars
I'm a fan of bands like The Replacements, Afghan Whigs, Minutemen, etc. and resisted the whole alt-country movement for years, not being able to shake off my pre-conceived stereotype of a band led by some Garth Brooks-meets-Billy Idol hybrid from hell.
But finally, after hearing too many people whose musical taste I respect talk about the greatness of Uncle Tupelo and the genius songwriting of Farrar and Tweedy, I finally decided to check them out.
This was the first CD I bought of theirs, and it was mind blowing for me. Such diversity and range, everything from pure country classics like "No Depression" to songs like "Gun" that could have been written by Paul Westerberg himself. And toss in their incredible cover of CCR's "Effigy" to boot.
I've since become a huge UT fan, have all of their CDs now, and am working my way through the Son Volt and Wilco catalogs. Great, great music.
Free Music Review: It Is About Time Hit: 5 Stars
It is about time Uncle Tupleo was recognized. It is about time that the music was heard rather than the story or the recommendation of a friend. But without the long absence without the building myth would this Anthology be so great? Maybe not, these songs aren't pretty, they're gritty. The songs choices capture every mood of Uncle Tupelo, and everyone will find a song to love. One note: "Sauget Wind" is also available on an early '90's compliation entitled "Buy This Used CD" which also contains a Sebadoh track, and many other very cool, very different tunes. But now the "Sauget Wind" is readily available my friends are now longer impressed with it's presence on my mixed tapes so I can now safely reveal my sources.
Free Music Review: the perfect anthology! and a whole new experience Hit: 5 Stars
what a one disc anthology should be!
great choice picks made by the founders themselves.
not a bad song in the bag!
this one covers all their true best and then some you might've missed.
I was really taken by the 1989 demo of Outdone. the flow of the song is the best I have ever heard it before!
every song is given a different feel than the albums gave. WHAT! you ask. the different song order I say. this disc as a whole feels really good all the way through. the album releases cut the songs open with a sharp intense blade showing the center meat of UT. 100%
if you are a new or old fan of UT then this is a great disc to have. it's a whole new experience and a great introduction.
Free Music Review: Listen up you freaks in Nashville... Hit: 5 Stars
When I bought this compilation, I already owned quite a few UT albums. The music contained on it some of the best country music ever created. It is such a shame that Uncle Tupelo isn't played on country radio, because these guys bring a new perspective to how great country music really is...so if you know someone that needs to be educated on some heritage, buy them this album as a gift.
In my opinion the key tracks are Fatal Wound, Gun, Moonshiner, (done Dylan style,) I Wanna Be Your Dog, (Stooges cover,) and Sauget Wind. But make no mistake: THIS ENTIRE COMPILATION WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. The only complaint I have about this thing is that they failed to include the cover of "Truck Drivin' Man," which is on the album Anodyne.
