Free Music Review: Right from the get-go, these guys didn't mess around.

Uncle Tupelo, a band that has influenced many, and yet, one that not many people have heard of. However, if you hear the twang of Ryan Adams, the crunch of Drive-By Truckers, and the siren call of Gillian Welch, you can hear the "No Depression" vibe that is Uncle Tupelo, a fantastic band that crawled out of the factory town of Belleville, Illinois, blending country, rock, punk, and folk into a wonderful melting pot that is truly a slice of Americana.

On this, their 1990 debut, Uncle Tupelo come bursting out the gate with plenty of punk influences on their back. One can hear this album and think of bands like The Replacements and The Minutemen, but with a touch of twang not heard on any of those bands' recordings before. Graveyard Shift and That Year open with a bang, but what is also apparent is the different styles guitarist Jay Farrar and bassist Jeff Tweedy had from the beginning. Jay's style was in-your-face and harsh, while Jeff was more contemplative and introspective. This of course led to their demise, but on this recording, no tension shows.

And it's a real rocking album to go along with too. Before I Break, Factory Belt, and Undone move along at a rocket's pace, but Train is easily the best rocker of the album. A song that moves between Crazy Horse twang and 3-chord punk, it's easily one of my favorites.

And also, the traditional styles are apparent too, with the straight up folk of No Depression, the quiet Screen Door, and the moody Life Worth Livin.

This is a fantastic and highly influential album by one of the best bands that graced the alternative genre. Highly reccomended.
