Free Music Review: And this bird CAN sing...

This is a charming album -- its strength is the choice of songs. Many of them are obscure 60's gems. It's hard to re-do a song that sounded perfect the first time around, so you pick songs that are good but need some updating, like The Beatles' And Your Bird Can Sing. Hoffs adds a refreshing sound to it. Alone Again Or by the band Love is fun as Warmth of the Sun and the Left Banke's She will Call You Up. The Bee Gees' Run to Me sounds a bit "Eternal Flame ish" (Sue's hit with the Bangles) but Sue has the delicate, vulnerable sweet vocals that makes the song hearfelt. Monday Monday is very well known and it would be hard to recreate the harmonies of the Mamas and the Papas; here it sounds very close to the original and doesn't really work. Weak Cuts: The Kids Are Alright, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere and I didn't care much for their version of Cinammon Girl. It sounds too close to the original and it seems out of place here. Ultimately, this album is like a piece of candy -- not nutritious, but a not-so-guilty pleasure. You can indulge in listening to all your 60's faves, while, in tradition of the Bangles, claim that "this album just came out!"
