Free Music Notes for Under The Covers, Vol. 1Free Music Review: My Favorite 2006 CD (So Far) Hit: 4 StarsMainly because Johnny Cash's "American V" is so damn sad. This is a fun, bright CD to listen to, perfect for popping into your car CD player to make the commuting miles fly by. If you're looking for something deeply meaningful or definitive re-interpretations of the songs, you'll probably be disappointed. If you're looking for enjoyable cover songs, you won't be.
The harmonies are sweet, no pun intended. Both Susanna and Matthew do a great job on their respective lead vocals, and the instrumentation (mostly by Sweet) is almost letter-perfect to the originals. Matthew Sweet does an amazingly convincing job of covering a wide range of vocal styles, from Neil Young to Brian Wilson. And Susanna Hoffs is Susanna Hoffs. Enough said.
The songs range from those we know by heart to some that are more obscure, but there isn't a bad one in the bunch. The more you listen to them, the more they grow on you. This one is in heavy rotation on my CD player, and I really hope that there will be a Volume 2, because I'll be out there to buy it.
Free Music Review: SWEET & SEXY!!! Hit: 4 StarsWhat do you get when you take two power-pop masters and put them in a room. A great pop record celebrating some sweet music.
Matthew Sweet has always been a sucker for a good cover it seems. He's turned up on more comps than anyone I know.
Under The Covers has been in constant rotation in my car for the past two weeks. Some of my favorite tracks are "Warmth Of The Sun", "Baby Blue", "Sunday Morning", and by far the most favorite track is The Bee Gees "Run to Me". Susanna and Matthew harmonize so beautifully on this track. It gives me chills. and I have to say Susanna Hoffs is HOTTER than ever! Doesn't she age? She's the sexiest woman in rock-n-roll.
By the way, check out High School Reunion - a tribute to those great 80's films! Matthew covers Tom Petty's classic "American Girl" on this CD comp. The guy just doesn't stop. When's Austin Power #4 coming out??? I need more Matthew in the movies. LOL

Free Music Review: A Great selection of covers from 60-70's Hit: 5 StarsTo be honest I bought this because I am a fan of Susanna Hoff. I was not familiar with Matthew Sweet but after I listened to his parts in this album I grew to like him. They both go very well together and their teamwork pays off to make this a better album because of it.
If you are a fan of Susanna Hoff you must get this album. It is some of her best work. Her voice is just perfect for these songs. She has been away from the music scene way too long and I look forward to many more volumes from these two.
When you are having a hard day or you are just tired of this crazy world put this album on and let Susanna and Matthew put your mind at ease with these great covers from the 60's and 70's.
Free Music Review: Inviting sounds of the '60s and '70s. Hit: 4 StarsWhen it comes to paying homage to the soft and rockin' sounds of the 1960s and early 1970s, who better to relive those sounds than Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs. Sweet and Hoffs revive their Austin Powers characters, Sid and Susie, via this CD compilation, Under The Covers, Vol. 1. They do a fine job in bringing back the California sound as well as the British Invasion, and sounds in between with bands, such as The Left Banke, The Mamas and The Papas, and of course, The Beatles, just to name a few. In addition, the CD booklet is a treat: Van Dyke Parks provides a little introduction, Ed Fotheringham provides the album's sixties-like artwork, and Sid and Susie exchange amusing snippets of each song.
Indeed, UNDER THE COVERS VOL. 1 is a mixed bag of songs. All of the songs are memorable and extremely great to sing along with. The highlights of the record are The Marmalade song "I See The Rain" and The Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing," the somewhat haunting "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?" by Fairport Convention, Neil Young and Crazy Horse's "Cinnamon Girl"is by far the most raunchiest track on the record, Love's "Alone Again Or" has a little flamenco guitar style playing, Sweet does his Brian Wilson on "The Warmth of the Sun," "Sunday Morning" is somber and poetic, "Care of Cell #44" has a Pet Sounds feel to it, "She May Call You Up Tonight" is very harmonic and quite rhythmic, and "Run To Me" by the Bee Gees is, indeed, the most heart-wrenching and beautiful songs on the record.
UNDER THE COVERS, VOL. 1 is definitely recommendable for those who just cannot get enough of cover versions. Also, this is a must for any Matthew Sweet or Susanna Hoffs fan.
