Free Music Notes for 1992-2002Free Music Review: priceless Hit: 5 Stars
Change is just inevitable - that's all there is too it. I've listened to all these songs millions of times - but tonight, for the first time, 'Cowgirl' somehow sounded a little clunky - the beat had lost its edge. Really surprising. And a little sad.
This 'band' - it's hard not to call it that, even if it seems a little wrong - in it's prime was as good in what they did as U2 or Radiohead or anyone else is in what they do. Because they were in a niche genre, even as significant a niche as it was, they never were to be as big. Which is fine. The electronic people of the 90's managed to prosper while still holding to an outsiders' status, which i always thought was a neat trick.
Those days aren't really gone, but they are faded. I think we're living in a conservative era musically when the biggest thing around is neo-soul. Underworld was so full of rich, expansive experimentation, the likes of which doesn't exist so much right now. (Radiohead is a big exception.) Their music has brought me a lot of joy.
I think 'Cups' and 'Something like a mama' should have made it onto this collection.
And 'Jumbo' is one of the most sheerly beautiful pop songs ever made...
Free Music Review: Ten years of Magnificent Music sampled on 2 CDs. Hit: 5 Stars
I love this CD Anthology. It showcases some of the Underworld's best songs. It also has some very hard to find tracks like the 12 minute plus Spikee, the beautifully sad & mellow 8 ball, the original version of Dirty and the harmonica driven Big Mouth. It also has classic Underworld tunes like King of Snake, Jumbo, Born Slippy Nuxx, Dirty Epic, Dark Train, and Mmm Skyscraper I love you. Moaner, Born Slippy Nuxx & Push Upstairs are all unique versions. Each is slightly different than the album/single versions. This makes another reason to buy this CD set. All of the songs on this 2 CD set are wonderful. If you are curious about the Underworld, buy this Anthology. If you enjoy the Underworld, this is a great way to experience their music. This is a wonderful sample of the music they have made over the past decade. Put this CD in, sit back and let it take you where it takes you. The Underworld doesn't create songs so much as they create beautiful art that you can listen to.
Free Music Review: Cohesive Hit: 5 Stars
Picking up at the beginning of their life with TvT records after their Pop careers took a deeper nose drive in the later 80's with the Warner bros. release of Change The Weather. This Greatest hits collection nails Underworld in the Never ending zenith of their careers as eletronica artist. This collection is a wonderful display for everyone from the novice fan to the most dedicated fans. This collection surprising enough is a heaven sent because of the track "8 Ball" being included (sadly I bought the Beach soundtrack just for the one track). I really enjoyed the track listing and the way it was put together ,it was very cohesive. Even though it was missing a few tracks it is well worth the money , because this reminds me why I started listening to Underworld in the first place. What's next a DVD with the videos (Hopefully) ? I would highly suggest buying the DVD for "EVERYTHING EVERYTHING LIVE" from Underworld along with this collection if possible.
