Free Music Notes for Everything EverythingFree Music Review: Truly live. Hit: 5 Stars
A pair of 40-something graphic designers with a dodgy musical past and a DJ in his 30s creating the sound of tomorrow? Yup.Until they came around, most live techno acts were comprised of a tape, a vocalist, someone miming, and a dancer. Underworld, Orbital, and a few others from the MIDI Circus days changed all that. While a bit short for my taste (2 CDs might have been a lot more appropriate), this is an almost flawless document of their live output. It demonstrates that they truly remix, deconstruct, and reconstruct on the fly - check out "Juanita/Kiteless". They can bring the sheer manic energy of "King Of Snake" and "Born Slippy .nuxx" and make them sound a million times louder and larger. Now, for the DVD.
Free Music Review: Euphoria... Hit: 5 Stars
I heard this recently after a housemate brought it home late one evening from a promotional night at a local club. I've seen 'Underworld' in concert a few times and I can honestly say that this disc captures them at their finest. They do a lot of improvisation for an electronic act, mixing different synths with different beats, and Karl Hyde drops lyrics from one track onto another, creating a seamless bit of techno mastery. The recording also wonderfully captures the enthusiasm of the crowd as the music builds in intensity. You can almost feel the frenzy. The highlight has to be 'Born Slippy' from the 'Trainspotting' soundtrack. You'll like what they've done with that track and many others on this collection.
Free Music Review: Everything,Everything and a whole lot more! Hit: 5 Stars
I've never seen Underworld live before and with this cd, I dont think I need to. 'Juanita',Kiteless' and 'Cups' kick things off nicely getting the crowd ready of what's to come. Their version of 'Pearl's Girl' sends shivers down my spine and I love the 'aaahhh' bits on the trancey chords really get me into a state of ecstacy. Amazing breakdown. 'Jumbo' is simply breath taking."Click"! 'Born slippy' live is mesmerising with a nice twist of analogue-esque twiddling mania. And 'Rez/Cowgirl ends things off superbly, getting the crowd to interact and sing along the riff at the end. Class. For anyone reading this review would you please let me know where I can find the 'Micronauts' remix of 'Bruce Lee'. thanks.
Free Music Review: Another 5-Star effort from Underworld Hit: 5 Stars
As you may already know, in Underworld's live shows they tweak and change thier songs into new incredible varations. This CD is no exception, and showcases thier awesome energetic techno thump-fest. The songs have been altered (in a good way!) so that they are funkier and are fueled by the fans. Every single track is excellent (except for Jumbo, which sticks too much to the original version), causing this CD to stay in your CD player for a long time. If you love Underworld, you must get this! If you are new to Underworld, you must get this! If you are new to techno, you must get this! You will not regret this purchase. Now if only I had a DVD player to watch the upcoming live DVD!
Free Music Review: As close to the live experience as you can get on a CD Hit: 5 Stars
One of the hardest things for a concert album to do is capture the experience of actually being there. Sure, you can have the crowd noise, and the inevitable "Thank you, thank you!" from the band, but actually capturing the *energy* of the performance is what a live album should strive for, and this album, like "Frampton Comes Alive", does a surprisingly good job of capturing not just the sound, but the energy of the crowd. When Underworld begins to play "Cowgirl" and the crowd roars its approval, you can feel their excitement, and when the album is finally over, you want to stand up and beg for an encore.
