Free Music Review: What happened to UL?

Well, I really wanted to like thier latest albulm. I listened to Here's to the Mourning several times and could never get into it. Other than Save Me and The Celebration Song, the rest of the albulm fell flat. I am all for change and everything, but compaired to all of thier other cd's this one was scary. I don't know what type of genre they are trying to become, but the hard rock vibe does not work well with Scott Russo's voice. I don't know what I expected, but this was not it. As I listen to all genres of music, I feel dissapointed. What happened UL?
Here's to the Mourning Poster
Unwritten Law, one of the finest bands to emerge from the late 90's SoCal rock scene are back with an incredibly solid, new studio effort entitled Here's To the Mourning. Taking a page from Rock n'Roll 101, Unwritten Law's frontman Scott Russo is consistently one of the most unpredictable and volatile singers on the scene today.After the stripped-down acoustic pop of 2003's Music in High Places, Unwritten Law's back to rock, adding stadium-metal theatrics and bigger-than-big production to their sunny pop-punk on Here's to the Mourning. Unfortunately, this is not really a good thing. Here is modern rock that sounds like it was written by an-out-of touch boardroom trying to reach target demographics--not, you know, a band. "Because Of You," the only song with a title more than one or two words long, is sonically a sweet take on the classic SoCal skatepunk sound. But it's so daft lyrically ("My satisfaction lies in your hands girl"?) and musically (you've heard commercials for cleaning products that rock harder and are more complex), it sounds like a boy band trying to be "hard." A few tunes add acoustic guitars and electronic elements to the rawk; these attempts just make this late '90s nostalgia sound even more tired and old. Newcomers are encouraged to start with either Places or their debut, Blue Room. --Mike McGonigal
