Free Music Review: Wonderful, Smooth T-bone Playing

I'm 40 and have been listening to Big Band music since I was a teenager: Miller, Shaw, Goodman, Lunceford, Ellington and Basie are the soundtrack of my life. So, how it is that I have managed to make it this far through life without having heard smooth trombone playing of Urbie Green? Thank goodness I found it now! I bought this CD about a week ago and haven't played or listened to anything else since I got it.
I'll try not to repeat the comments of others who have equally good things to say about the CD but will instead mention a few of the numbers that I love. The arrangements are by Ralph Burns (from the Woody Herman Orch) and another fine trombonist and leader who is largely forgotten today, Bobby Byrne. For those familiar with both of them, I suspect you'll easily be able to pick out their charts without having to look at the liner notes. I am especially drawn to "Prisoner of Love," "Stairway to the Stars," and the seldom heard "My Secret Love," probably because all of them date back to the 1930's. What I especially appreciated is that these tracks are played in a way that gives a proper nod out to the masters who first waxed these fine standards, but without trying to recreate their sound. A good example of this is Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade," which is evocative but doesn't try to duplicate the familiar Miller clarinet-reed voicing.
This is dance band music, meaning it's time to push back the rug, grab your favorite dance partner and dream the night away like it was 1946 again. Only one track is really not danceable (at least to this oldster) and that's "Runnin' Wild."
