Free Music Review: It' soars...I cannot get enough

Mark and Greg were members of a "improv" comedy group called Cardiff Giant in Chicago, IL.. This group started performing short improvisational games once a week at a bar on the Campus of the University of Chicago named Jimmy's Woodlawn Tap in a show called "Avant-Garfield" ("every wednesday night for the rest of your life...". The group, which included other very terrific comedic actors/artists including Scott Hermes, Bob & Laura Fisher, John Hildreth, as well as many other really wonderful performers, developed a style of theatre which was utterly funny, dark, heart stopping and unique. Eventually they came to write several full length plays in improv, including "Love Me" , "LBJFKKK", and a musical called "Aftertaste", a story about a fad involving people buying and eating "fatal food", probably CGs biggest hit. The style that they developed together has been amplified and "fully realized" in Mark and Greg's UT.

The music in this musical is truly incredible, a real work of love on so many levels. The lyrics and music are very very clever, but also beautiful. It's just soars. It is really moving I think. Within the score really the full story is completely revealed, a remarkable feat I think (can you think of another show that really does that). The comparision to Brecht-Weill is probably largely due to the fact that the orchestration is very similar to threepenny and that there is nothing else really to compare it to. I think it owes as much to Sweeny Todd and 3PO, but really this is a NEW kind of work. I urge everyone who loves theatre, who loves comedy, who loves musicals, who hates musicals, who need want and deserve to feel alive, should really listen to this record.
