Free Music Notes for My Way

Free Music Review: Usher's voice is sexy, smoldering.....
Hit: 5 Stars

I normally don't like rap, but when I heard Usher/My Way for the first time I fell in love with some of the songs on this Grammy-nominated second CD by Atlanta native Usher. This CD isn't only rap but R&B. I enjoy Usher's smooth voice and the romantic lyrics he sings, especially in such tracks as the smoldering "Slow Jam" duet with Monica, the gentle yet sexy "I Will" with its catchy backbeat and sensual lyrics, and "One Day You'll Be Mine" which is good for either dancing or, shall I say, more intimate endeavors.

So even if you don't like rap, you might want to listen to Usher/My Way and maybe you'll be just as impressed as I was by this young man's voice and talent. He has released several other albums since this 1997 production (which also comes in a clean, less explicit edition), so if you like the material on this CD, maybe you'll listen to newer offerings by Usher such as 8701 and U-Turn.

Free Music Review: I give this a 3.5
Hit: 3 Stars

I picked up this album back in 98' when I first heard the single "You Make Me Wanna", this album is surprisly parental advisory. Usher tries to be more rap like in this album, and you can tell too because he has Lil Kim on "Just Like Me". When Usher starts getting into rap the music is dead because Usher is more of a R&B/Soul hip hop type of person. This album has some good songs like ''My Way'' and '' You Make Me Wanna''. But with hits like ''Slow Jam'', with Monica, Usher really shows he is a really good singer. The LP is way too short and there are a couple of fillers, moust notibly ''You Make Me Wanna'' extended version. Usher is a good singer and when he stays at that and not at that P. Diddy stuff(which is probably why he made that rap song because of Diddy status of commerical R&B/Rap back in 97,98)he really shows hes a star.

Free Music Review: Excellent...
Hit: 5 Stars

This album first came to the attention of my ears thanks to an old girlfriend in the equivalent of 8th grade who had nothing but good things to say about it. Naturally I was a little curious, and we agreed on a swap... it was a nervous time, would I miss my Blackstreet "Another Level" album?

Well, truth be told, I did miss it, but not to any fault of the Usher CD that temporarily replaced it, for this CD is an example of modern R&B at it's best. The biggest names in R&B production and writing were brought together for this project, with LA Reid and Babyface leading the way, closely followed by Jermaine Dupri and Puff Daddy who took executive producer credits on Usher's self titled '94 debut I believe.

The album kicks off in the best possible fashion, with the monster hit "You Make Me Wanna" that spent 13/14 weeks at the top of the US Charts, before Lil' Kim adds her vocal talents for the raunchy "Just Like Me". This paves the way for Usher to slow things down for the remainder of the album, the only excursion being that for "My Way". The best song in my opinion, leaves the listeners waiting until Track 9, and that is "One Day You'll Be Mine" where Jermaine Dupri utilises an amazing Isley Brothers from "Footsteps In The Dark", which also appeared on Ice Cube's "It Was A Good Day". Everything combined perfectly on this track, and I could sit for hours without even being tempted to move onto the next track.

Usher isn't the greatest of R&B vocalists but this was never the question, the final product is what matters, and married with the production and songwriting found here, the album becomes the classic it is. An essential purchase that shows no effects of age from the time it dropped 6 years ago now. The only complaint I have is that the album clocks in at 41 minutes long, and that's with the extended remix of "You Make Me Wanna", which leaves the listener yearning for more. Perhaps less is more in this case and the inclusion of another few tracks would have spoiled the continuity and quality of the release.

Highlight Tracks

"One Day You'll Be Mine", "You Make Me Wanna", "Nice & Slow"

Free Music Review: from performer to producer, an r&b CLASSIC
Hit: 5 Stars

Despite his lukewarm exposure prior to 1997, Usher essentially burst onto the r&b scene with "My Way." Its been close to six years since and this album keeps sounder better and better. The low number of tracks (9 original ones, 1 remix) helps this album avoid the common pitfall of having numerous mediocre tracks. In fact, every song with the exception of the boring, Blackstreet sounding "I Will" is worth a hard listen.

Usher's exposure was aided by the excellent balance between ballads and uptempo songs. The upbeat "You make me wanna" dominated airplay and created great interest in the album. The popularity of the second single "Nice & Slow" was somewhat puzzling to me (as I would rank it as the sixth best song on the album). However, the popularity that song experienced can't be denied. The real gems on this album, aside from the first single, are "Bedtime", the upbeat "Come Back" featuring Jermaine Dupri, and "One day you'll be mine." Another track worthy of mention is the Dupri-beated "Just like Me" featuring the foul mouthed Lil' Kim.

It wouldn't be appropriate to mention this cd without acknowledging the incredible producers, most notably Jermaine Dupri, who really turn this 10 track album into an r&b classic.

Free Music Review: Good!
Hit: 3 Stars

This is a good album...but the replay value is not so good! The songs just don't sound the same......but I still recommend people to at least give this one a listen if not a buy. Peace out folks!
