Free Music Notes for Raymond v. RaymondFree Music Review: Usher - Raymond V. Raymond (4.5 stars)
Since the tragic death of the King of Pop back in the summer of 09, there has been a very large void in the music industry that desperately needs to be filled, and the only man i believe is anywhere close to talented enough to be able to fill MJ's shoes would be Usher. Usher has had the R&B/Pop genre on lock since 1997 when he was only 18 and already had a number one hit in the form of the classic "You Make Me Wanna". And since than, Usher has given us countless smash singles (a few of which were record breakers), and four multi-platinum albums. Now granted, only two of those albums would I consider to be listen worthy (Confessions, and Here I Stand) besides the singles, because thats one thing that Usher has always been able to give us was hit singles. He just knows how to make catchy stuff. And while a lot of people thought the highly anticipated follow up to his instant classic Confessions, Here I Stand, was a disappointment, I personally thought it wasnt all that bad. I mean it was defenitly no where close to Confessions, but it was still an above average album that he spent a lot of time working on. And honestly, anything from Usher is normally a lot better than half of the crap on the radio these days. But with all that said, RVR (Raymond V. Raymond) was staged to be Usher's big comeback album and his return to his "single sex symbol" days. And the thing that made Here I Stand kind of hard to review was the fact that no matter what that album was going to be looked at as a disappointment because there was no way he was going to be able to put out an album that was anywhere close to as good as Confessions was. But with RVR, he doesnt have that same competition he had with his last album, which makes RVR a lot easier to accept. And right off the bat Usher established himself as a single man again with the first promo single "Papers", which is so far the biggest hit off the album as it reminds a lot of people of his Confessions stuff because the song is a ballad about his highly publicized divorce. And then on the first official single, the mid tempo banger "Daddy's Home", Usher boasts his new single marital status even more by pretty much stating he's back for all his female fans. And the up tempo club banger "Lil Freak" is the closest thing to "Yeah" hes made since Confessions. "Lil Freak" could easily be a huge hit similar to "Yeah" if promoted properly. But the song on the album that will remind fans of Usher the most of Confessions would be the beautiful break up ballad "Foolin' Around", where Usher pretty much says he's been unfaithful yet again with his significant other. But "Foolin' Around" is easily the most Confessions like song on the album, as it sounds almost identical to a "Burn Pt.2". But where RVR truly shines the most is on the three tracks produced by former collaborators Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Jam & Lewis have always been great producers for Usher, dating all the way back to his 8701 album. They always set the mood perfectly for his albums, and that was one of the big thing I felt like was missing on Here I Stand was production from the legendary duo. And they continue their stellar production trend on RVR, starting with the extremely funky and groovy opening track "Monstar", which so far is my favorite track on the album as it reminds me sooooo much of something Michael Jackson would have done if he were still around. And on the almost reggae-ish bedroom banger "Pro Lover", Usher gives his fan's another swagger filled signature Usher track, which is another Jam & Lewis track and another one of my favorites on the album. And the last of the three gems produced by Jam & Lewis is the spacey slow jam "Mars Vs. Venus", its a very unique and dreamy song sure to be among the fan favorites. But don't get to excited either, because RVR does have some low points. Like on the just flat out lame and boring "Guilty" and the sad attempt at a club banger "So Many Girls". And "OMG" is probably the most annoying song on the album as it reminds me of a song Souljaboy would do with some lame D grade singer. But Usher still has the majority of the album as banger, like the super banger "She Don't Know" which I can already picture hearing that song all the time in the club, and the mid tempo Jim Jonsin ballad "Making Love" is also a standout with Ush's smooth and rich vocals stealing the show on that track. And another thing that really helped this album, is the shorter track listing. I don't think Usher could put out another 20 track album, and have it still be a classic. The 14 song track listing is perfect for the album, and i feel like that was part of the reason Here I Stand wasnt as potent was because it was to long. Like I said overall, RVR was the return that Usher had been waiting for. It's by far his second best album behind Confessions, and has a very similar vibe to Confessions. I've even gone as far as to say RVR is the poor mans Confessions. Its a much welcomed return to the old Usher that everyone loved... the wedding ring is off for sure on this album. And what helped this album the most was an upgrade in the production department, the biggest upgrade being in Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis as they basically built the foundation for this album with there stellar production. Usher really spent a lot of time on this album (evident by how many times this album leaked), and the final product may have its fair share of flaws, but at least this time the albums pro's out weigh its con's by a lot combining for Usher's best album since Confessions and my R&B album of 2010...
