Ute Lemper has been and still is often compared to Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Edith Piaf... This video shows distinctly, with all due respect to these performers, that no connection is fair. She is in a class by herself. If nothing else, her striking performance of "Surrabaya Johnny" should give it away. She lives each song, and doesn't just sing it. I have never seen any other performer, no matter how good or well-known do it the way she does. Ute Lemper is incomparable. Not to Lotte Lenya, not to Marlene Dietrich, not to anyone, and this concert is a trip to a newfound heaven.
