Free Music Notes for Vampire WeekendFree Music Review: Witty, catchy, thoroughly enjoyable--worthy of repeated listens Hit: 5 Stars
I got Vampire Weekend as a Christmas present from my wife, per the recommendation of my 14-year-old son, and I absolutely love it. The lyrics are witty, and the rhythms are catchy. I especially like the reggae/ska/African elements that are scattered throughout the disc and are especially prominent on the songs Oxford Comma (my personal favorite), A-Punk, and Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa. On top of that, the band is able to masterfully weave the use of classical instruments like harpsichord, cello, violin, and viola into these very modern pop songs, which gives them a very fresh and unique sound. Even so, as other reviewers have noted, there obviously are a number of musical influences at work here, including Paul Simon's Graceland CD, the English Beat, and the Talking Heads. More than anyone else, however, I frequently found myself being reminded of the Police--which is not a bad thing. Very highly recommended

More than half over, 2008 trends toward one of the better years in recent new music history. The last time we saw this much quality innovation and variation was the punk era, when the artists of interest hadn't even yet learned how to play their instruments properly. What they had going for them was attitude. American artistic education has certainly matured, evidenced by the excellent musicianship demonstrated by artists like Vampire Weekend. This disc ranks among the highlights.
The songs are fun, the music is crisp and the beats are lively. A-Punk rocks. The M79 is obviously a NYC Metro line for you rural folk. Don't know what a Kwassa Kwassa is but I thought I was on an island when I heard it. The CD is a blast and is a great addition to a best 0f '08 list. I rank the disc most accurately at 4.33 out of 5.00 stars, rounded down to 4.0. Nicely fresh, original and upbeat.
Free Music Review: Hooray for Summer Hit: 5 Stars
I must admit that I was very skeptical about this album at first, based on the few songs I heard between The World Cafe and various television spots they'd done. I decided to assume they were all flash and not delve deeper into their music. That worked well at first, and the long, cold winter spent with more organic, folkier music allowed me to extend my ignorance. When the weather again began to turn warmer, and I decided to embrace, rather than shun, the sun, my mind was easily changed by hearing "Oxford Comma." Later, when I put it in my car with all the windows down and the warm air streaming over me, I got hooked. This rivals early Beach Boys as great music to do this to. Very sunny instrumentation, and good use of violin throughout. Makes me wish I would have worked harder and gotten into an Ivy League school.
Free Music Review: Definitely Worth Listen to, Again and Again Hit: 5 Stars
Vampire Weekend is a relatively new band from New York City and have had much hype recently with their self-titled release. They are much talked about on the internet and have done a great David Letterman appearance, adding to all the buzz about them. They have a relaxed sense with their afro-beats and rhythms that's gaining fans daily. Ezra Koenig's vocals are sweet in a charming and laid-back way with his lyrics about the typical relationships, girls and cheating.
What makes them stand out among tons of other bands doing the same thing is their use of a variety of instruments that fluff up their catchy tunes. They almost remind me of a modern version of the Beach Boys done with an eclectic twist and more interesting with the use of the numerous instruments. Definitely worth listening to.
Free Music Review: Vampire Weekend = Wow Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this cd as something to listen to when I went on a trip to Paris. Like for the plane, or around the city. Well I listened to it a little bit and then barely listened to it at all. I was mad at myself for buying something that I didn't really want. Well, as of recently, I have been listening to it more and more. Right now I'm listening to it. haha.
I really like the songs, "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" "A-Punk" "Mansard Roof" "M79" and "Campus" The other songs are still growing on me. :)
Bottom Line : It's a really good cd and it mixes so many different styles. It really sounds African at sometimes, which is totally weird but awesome. The lyrics are at times complex, funny, and true. I really recommend this cd to anyone who wants to try something different and amazing! :D
