Free Music Notes for Vampire WeekendFree Music Review: I hate VW Hit: 1 StarsI got VW after Paste Magazine raved about them. Talk about overblown. I tried to give them chance, but I couldn't stop thinking that this is music young republicans will be listening at their 'hipster' parties in Minneapolis in September. Just plain awful.
Free Music Review: A Great Debut, and a Strong Divergence from General Alt Rock Hit: 4 StarsI've given this CD a few listens, and I've begun to appreciate it even more with each listen: each of the songs fit well with the rest of the CD, and while there are definitely some particularly strong songs on the album ("Mansard Roof", "A-Punk" and the hook in "One (Blake's Got A New Face)" all come to mind) there aren't any songs that I'd say "...eh" to.
It definitely has an Afro/Caribbean feel to it, which adds to its divergence from standard alternative fare. The influence of the likes of the Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel can be heard in it as well. Overall a strong debut.
Free Music Review: strong debut, very original Hit: 3 StarsInteresting and very diffrent debut. style is all over the place but it works and keeps me moving, very strong debut, cant wait to see them live.
Free Music Review: Headphone Commute Review Hit: 5 StarsThere is something intriguing and almost unnatural about the fact that I am continuously drawn towards Vampire Weekend. The light-hearted melodies with simple accompaniment of organ, harpsichord, strings, and flute, turn the clock back to the times of invincibility and carefree college days. Vampire Weekend is a four member New York City indie band, that slightly nods towards the afro-pop genre with a hint of ska. The 2/4 percussion, accented with African elements and an occasional conga, bring on that feeling of kwassa kwassa rhythms. Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio describe their style as "Upper West Side Soweto", with influences from both, Western classical music and Congolese soukous music. After a couple of successful top hit singles on the UK Indie charts, Vampire Weekend got picked up by none other than XL Records. 2008 brought on their debut self titled full length, and by now it may be too late to hail praise to their sound - Spin has already declared them as The Year's Best New Band in March '08 issue. Look, it's been a while since I've written about anything other then instrumental or electronic, and even though I consider my taste pretty wide and open, Vampire Weekend reminds me that there's a whole ocean of untapped genres. Simply put, Vampire Weekend brings back the ease with which The Beatles conquered the world.
Free Music Review: People trying to sound too smart Hit: 5 StarsSo a lot of people are saying that this is overhyped, not memorable, or a rip off of old music. Well I think you guys need to stop trying to categorize music into something you recognize. VW has come along with a new, catchy, and quite enjoyable CD that is good for listening. If you believe that what other musicians have done should affect what this CD is about, get a life. Music is simply for entertainment, and this album comes through there for sure.
