Free Music Notes for 1984Free Music Review: It was the best of times and time to JUMP Hit: 3 StarsAlthough a few of the tunes were good and hits at the time, this has not aged well. The only exceptions being the three tracks Top Jimmy, Drop Dead Legs and House of Pain which resemble those old VH albums which we had come to love. Hot For Teacher was the only hit that had the balls of the earlier work.
As for the MTV thing, I lived through it all and the videos were excellent. I think even I'll Wait had a video. Jump, Panama (Reach down between my legs)...Hot For Teacher (with her on the desks). Class Dismissed. This was the old VH. David Lee Roth really shined. Move over and let Sammy take over. End of story.
(I hear you missed us...we're back!)
Yes, David. We missed you. Still do.
Free Music Review: I Love Ed's Tone On This Album Hit: 5 StarsThe tone and sound on this album is one of Ed's best creations. With Ed being the pepetial innovator that he is and how he is always changing things up musically regardless of what people think is a testament of his/Van Halens staying power. Ed hit it right on the head with this one as far as attracting a wide "variation" of audience. Just look at the sales. This album was GREAT , no two ways about it. All the songs are of top quality. The most underrated song on the album which I thought was exceptional was Girl Gone Bad which rarely got air play. I remember the first time I heard "Jump" at a dance and how that song got me hooked on the spot along with Panama , I'll Wait and the whole rest of the record for that matter. I listen to these recordings at least two or three times a month. Van Halen was at their peak with this record and touring the planet like kings. The old team was excellent and it is not hard to believe that Eddie and the band went on to achieve icon success through the rest of their carrer. Its a shame that grown men (Dave , Ed , Mike & Alex)can't put aside their egos and tour the planet like kings once more. I would love to see the old team back together.
Free Music Review: A virtuoso of a performance for Van Halen at its peak. Hit: 5 StarsI was very fortunate to get tickets to this 1984 concert tour, during the absolute pinnacle of Van Halen's performance and hard-driving, yet beautifully mastered and pleasantly sounding rocking rifts.
"Panama" has got to be one of the all-time-greatest performances of Eddie Van Halen...that "blows 'em all away" as Sammy Haggar lately chants in a chorus in latter years. There are moments in this song that one has to simply lose themselves at Eddie's virtuoso of hard-driving, incessant melodic licks. David Lee Roth simply outshines vocalists in this song, making his purely natural bravado of a voice scream out just as Eddie rips his guitar, adding another instrument to the simply amazing song. Yeah it's been overplayed....but take a fresh listen with earphones on and you'll know why you have to have this album.
Ripping and roaring, with a blazing inferno of rock guitar!
Free Music Review: A New Direction for 80's Rock Hit: 5 StarsVan Halen's classic "1984" album is a timeline for rock music, they were the first band that used synthesizers in a serious way and made it commerical rock-music which later led to that the 80's were shaped with synthesizers in many of the bands music. "Jump" became a major chart selling hit in 1984, David Lee Roth took the band to new heights, but unfortunately he took himself too serious and was kicked from the band after this album. "Jump" however is this album's highlights, with synthesizers and a catchy rock sound you get in a good mood with. "Panama" is tougher though and you really get to see the greatness of Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing there. "Top Jimmy" and "Drop that Legs" are great classic Van Halen songs while "Hot for Teacher" is one of their all time bests, it starts rough uptempo with heavy drum beating and some lightning fast guitars, it's basically about the fascination for a hot teacher. "House of Pain" is a raw and fast rock song signed Van Halen and "Girl Gone Bad" starts slow but soon becomes yet another rocker with a wonderful guitar solo. "I'll Wait" is a mid synth song that later sounded like the typical 80's rock song that many albums copied from them.
This is a great and important rock album that shaped the 80's rock, It got some wonderful songs and no bad one's. Should be part of your collection.
Free Music Review: An all- time classic that should be in everyone's home! Hit: 5 StarsWhat can anyone say about Van Halen's sixth studio album "1984" that has not been said. Its Van Halen's last album with the living legend David Lee Roth, it includes synthesizers which were a huge gamble for Van Halen but it paided off greatly, it includes some of their best songs (Jump, Panama, Hot for Teacher, Drop Dead Legs, and I'll Wait), and its 10x Platinum plus and at diamond status. What more do you want?! Lol. Anyway, this album is GREAT and I dont care if this was the end of DLR or if you want to say the end of Van Halen because it is not. Dave left because he wanted to be a star and not a musician. Plus he sued Van Halen multiple times for the royalities and just last year in 2004 Dave turned his back on music to become a paramedic. Sammy Hagar is in and here to stay ladies and gentleman so if you want to play doctor talk to Dave but if you want to Rock and Roll call Sammy because there's only one way to rock, period.
