Free Music Review: Van Halen at it's best!
Hit: 5 Stars

Van Halen never really recovered from David Lee Roth's departure. Despite all the trouble and his presence when he was there, this compact disc of one of their most popular ever record albums has hits like "hot for teacher" and a memorable video that went with it but not with this compact disc. We all remember Roth's pants and his rendition of Jump. I never got the song, Panama, but the album is a classic. I remember when my supermarket sold albums like Van Halen's 1984 with Footloose Soundtrack and Michael Jackson's Thriller. Those days of record albums are long gone. Cassettes came and went and now the compact disc looks like it's here to stay so if you're a Van Halen fan, you might as well get this one to play over and over again.

Free Music Review: Roth's last Hurrah
Hit: 4 Stars

Van Halen was innovative with the use of keyboards on this CD. 1984 is a unique instrumental opening, which leads into the keyboard-driven "Jump." This clearly one of their best-known songs. Some other well-known tracks on here are Panama and Hot For Teacher.

This was the last CD before the great divorce (when frontman David Lee Roth parted from the rest of the band). Neither were quite the same after they went separate ways. VH did better than Roth in the time that followed, but time showed us that David Lee Roth and Van Halen were better together. Every so often, talk of them reuniting comes out from the media. Maybe someday it will be so.

Free Music Review: Diamond Dave's VH Career Goes Off With A Bang.
Hit: 5 Stars

Van Halen's first barrage of albums, "The debut in particular", created the genre known as pop-metal. However, Van Halen was simply way more talented than the average hair-metal band. I'm talking of course about Eddie Van Halen's incredible guitar playing which rewote the rules for what heavy metal guitar could sound like. He shredded through all of Van Halen's first albums in which most, if not all, were landmark recordings. Now we get to this album, 1984, made in the year 1984. Despite what some people think this is not the first VH album to use keyboards and synths. The song, "And The Cradle Will Rock", used keyboards, however they were fed through a guitar amp and sounded like typical pick scrapes. This is the first time, however, synths are actually mixed in to aid the songs and give them a more pop friendly sound.

The opening title track, essentially a synth-pop track, definitely does not sound like Van Halen and neither does the next track, "Jump", which, ironicly enough would go on to be their most recognizable song. The song proves that Eddie is just as fast on the keyboard as he is on his guitar. "Why Wait", is another synth-pop track but the rest of the albums is good old-fashioned hard rock. "Hot for teacher", is a stand out with Alex Van Halen's drumming sounding like a truck motor and featuring a typical two handed tap fest by Eddie. The videos for, "Jump", and, "Hot For Teacher", became MTV staples, the latter being a humorous parody of a school day featuring teachers that were a little bit more scandally clad than usual.

This was frontman David Lee Roth's last album with the group before he took on a solo career. Sammy Hagar took his place and the bands music switched over to songs that were even more pop-friendly than 1984. After Hagar left, Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone took over for the group's last proper album the, horrible flop, Van Halen III. In other words, 1984 is probably the group's last great album and a nice way to see how that phase of their career ended.

Free Music Review: Van Halen's best CD
Hit: 5 Stars

It's a shame that David Lee Roth was out of the band after this album, because his singing skills far outshined Sammy Hagar's and he left Van Halen right at its climax. All of the melodies that Van Halen concocted after 1984 have been soiled by the uninteresting voices of Sammy and Gary, who incessantly degrade the incredible guitar-playing of Eddie Van Halen and ruin otherwise catchy melodies with their lame vocals. It is on 1984 however that the band has everything going for them: excellent vocals, excellent melodies, and spectacular guitar-jamming that has not been insulted by crap singing. My favorite song by the band, "Hot for Teacher", is featured on this album and is a sparkling example of how talented Van Halen is with its wild guitar, clever drum beats, and humorous vocals as well (aside from that, it's also horrendously catchy). Also on 1984 are the classics "Jump" and "Panama", which have good reason to be played often on the radio since they're two of Van Halen's finest pieces. This CD additionally has more synthesizer use than the typical Van Halen album, and they're pretty good with it too. Overall this is an outstanding classic rock album that I would rank second in a line-up of good pre-90's CDs (first would be AC/DC's "Back in Black"). Van Halen fans certainly ought to purchase this release if they don't have it already, and those who like classic rock should enjoy this CD also. Make sure to check out Van Halen's self-titled album and "Women & Children First" also.

Free Music Review: Panama
Hit: 5 Stars

The first song ever i heard of Van Halen was Panama. I loved that song when i heard Eddie break with that little harmonic jingle about 26 seconds into the song, and again before the chorus. That hooked me, so I looked into Van Halen more, and found some more incredible music!

Eruption,
You Really Got Me,
Jamie's Crying,
Runnin' With The Devil,
(Oh) Pretty Woman,
Best of Both Worlds,
Jump,
Panama,
And The Cradle Will Rock...,
Poundcake,
and Dance The Night Away are my favorites.

Eddie Van Halen is now one of my favorite guitarists. Eruption is a great solo for any guitarist, Eddie's a genius on his 6-string. Anyways, Panama is my favorite song from this incredible album, 1984. This album deserves 8 stars.
