Free Music Notes for Diver DownFree Music Review: Not great stuff Hit: 3 StarsFor better or worse, Diver Down exemplifies all that is David Lee Roth. Not surprising, when we recall Edward Van Halen's grumblings that Roth exerted almost total control on this album. Diver Down ominously foreshadows a Diamond Dave that later would front a Vegas act; a Diamond Dave whose most recent album of the same title constitutes nothing but cover tunes. It 's over the top flair with little substance. 'Dancing in the Streets' and 'Big Bad Bill' were never great songs to begin with, and Van Halen doesn't do much to augment my assessment of them. While David Lee Roth seems to be having the time of his life here, I can't help but think that the rest of the band didn't share in his exuberance. The band seems lifeless, certainly when compared to the high-energy records that immediately preceded (Fair Warning) and succeeded (1984) Diver Down. While there are a couple good songs here worthy of the VH imprint (" Full Bug," "Hang `Em High," "Little Guitars"), there are too many mediocre tracks to make this required listening. Muddled production also doesn't help Diver Down's cause: the drums sound slushy and Eddie's guitar tone is weak. I would recommend virtually any of the other DLR or Sammy Hagar-era albums before this one. While an average Van Halen album is still solid enough to blow away 99% of the stuff put out by other rock bands, most listeners familiar with VH would agree to rate it a disappointment.
Free Music Review: Worth buying... Hit: 3 Starseven if just for "Little Guitars."
Free Music Review: Expect the unexpected! Hit: 5 StarsThis is one of Van Halen's best displays of their truely incredible talent. (Don't try and typecast this band... otherwise you may not enjoy this) They show they can do it all, hard rock, vocals, even swing jazz! (If you haven't heard "Big Bad Bill" it is really well done and nothing like you've ever heard them do before. Eddie's dad does the clarient solos-- you can see that talent runs in the family and across the generations...) They do covers and truely make them their own as well as performing several of their own tracks in their usual "blow your doors off" style... Loved it when it first came out and it still sounds GREAT today.
Free Music Review: For the hardcore fans. Hit: 2 StarsClocking in at 31 minutes and containing maybe 12 minutes of original Van Halen, this sounds more like a contractual obligation than an actual album Van Halen would have made, especially in their 80s heyday. Their covers of "Dancing in the Street" and "Pretty Woman" are inspired, but hardly worth the purchase of the album. If you're a completist, get it. If you're casual, get "Fair Warning" or "1984" instead.
Free Music Review: For the hardcore fans Hit: 2 StarsClocking in at 31 minutes and containing maybe only 15 minutes of original material, this album seems more like a contractual obligation than a proper album that Van Halen would make, especially in their 80s heyday with Diamond Dave. Their covers of "Pretty Woman" and "Dancing in the Streets" are inspired, but hardly make the entire album worthy of purchase. "Little Guitars" is a great Van Halen song, but not considered a classic. If you are a true Van Halen nut, or a completist, by all means buy this one, but if you're casual, stick with its predecessor "Fair Warning" or its follow-up, the monumental "1984".
