Free Music Notes for Fair WarningFree Music Review: Quite possibly Van Halen's best album 25 years on Hit: 5 StarsVan Halen's fourth album Fair Warning was released in May of 1981.
After unleashing THREE Platinum albums in a row, the members of Van Halen(lead singer David Lee Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his drummer brother Alex and bass player Michael Anthony) were starting to splinter apart. At the time, tensions between Eddie Van Halen and Diamond David Lee Roth had been mounting over various reasons(one of which was Eddie married actress Valerie Bertinelli and Roth was jealous that Eddie got to marry the movie star and he didn't) and Roth believed he was what made VH and Eddie thought he was what made VH so the tensions spawned an album that became Van Halen's darkest to date would it be a classic or a bust, read ahead and find out(as I did when I first heard this album on cassette when I was 8 in 1984 and subsequently got on CD then remastered CD).
We begin with a faded-in guitar doodle which gives way to the great rocker Mean Streets. This song is a classic rocker and Eddie's soloing here is un-Earthly and would become a rock radio staple. Next is the rocking Dirty movies which featured Eddie playing some tasty slide in addition to some great riffing and Roth's vocal about watching dirty movies was classic, especially the middle section of the track. Next is the punk-metal Sinners Swing which was one of the first VH tracks to utter an obscenity and is a superb rocker. The first side ends with Hear About it Later which was another great rocker, the ending solo was killer.
The album's second half kicks off with the rock radio smash Unchained which is just a killer song. This rocker just tears up the place. Next is the funk-laced Push Comes to Shove which was as funky as VH got save Eddie's pyrotechnic solo in the middle of the song. Next is the rocker So This is Love which is one of the band's best rockers about, what else, sex and a great rocker. Next was the instrumental Sunday Afternoon in the Park which was basically Michael Anthony's synth-induced bass guitar solo with Alex pounding on the skins like a possessed Bonham. We end with the punkish One Foot Out the Door which was the second VH track to utter an obscenity but is a great album closer and Eddie's solo just smoked at the end.
Fair Warning was another US Top 10 Platinum seller album for the band despite the fact "so-called" corporate rock bands ruled the music scene by then. Fair Warning still sounds great today, especially with the remastered version which came out in 2000.
Recommended!
Free Music Review: Wowsers! Hit: 5 StarsIf you are looking for the album that really shows what EVH could do, this is the one. The solo on Sinner's Swing is ridiculous. You can tell Dimebag listened to it more than once, lol. Eddie's finest hour.
Free Music Review: Best VH Hit: 5 StarsTo this day (even though VH hasnt released a CD in years) this remains my favorite VH album and it seems to be a favorite of VH fans. This is a MASTERPIECE and and fan of rock or metal should have this in their collection. This isn't typical VH though, even though Unchained gets the most airplay from this album, the other songs extremly heavy. Just the opening riff in Mean Streets still makes me crank the volume all the way. A treat and its to bad they never matched this record. ENJOY
Free Music Review: Van Halen At Their Darkest And Best!! Hit: 5 StarsAlthough this sometimes gets overlooked by the casual fan, this is their masterpiece. While their debut and 1984 are really great, the people who say that those two are Van Halen's best, probably haven't heard Fair Warning. There's no filler on this CD, and every track is a killer. The dark sound of Fair Warning doesn't make it depressing or anything, and it's still a great album to party and get drunk to. Just like all the others VH CDs with DLR! My personal favorites are "Dirty Movies," "Hear About It Later," "One Foot Out The Door," "Unchained," "So This Is Love?" ... aw hell every single one of them!! I definitley recommend Fair Warning to every fan of rock, or fan of music in general.
Free Music Review: Make that 6 Stars Hit: 5 StarsI have to say that this is the FINEST work overall of the DAVE era. The " Anchor " song of this album is my own personal national anthem, " Unchained ". The greatest guitar work you can ever hear ( I am a guitarist ). Although other excellent songs are " Dirty Movies ", " Mean Street ", " Sinners Swing ", and, " So This Is Love ". The entire album is fast paced for the most part and it is good to catch your breath with, " Push Comes To Shove". This is another album that you should buy and keep in your collection if you can never buy another VH-CD ever.
I can say that the first 6 VH albums are worth your time but if you can only afford 1 make it this one.
