Free Music Notes for Van HuntFree Music Review: a new jack set it off with his debut album Hit: 5 StarsAfter reading the reviews here on amazon, and hearing Van Hunts "down here in hell with you" jam everywhere from XM radio to my local R&B station here in Houston, I decided to go "cop" the album.
After finding it in Walmart of all places for only $8.66, I listened to it from the first song to the last song, and I thought I got duped...I immediately labeled it as "garbage" and it was about to go into the Mount Everest pile of horrible cd's that I bought over the years...until I gave it a second look..and I am glad I did....
THIS CD IS OFF THE HINGES!!!!
The CD starts off slow, I think thats what threw me off..but I didnt listen to the lyrics.....The song Dust starts it off, where Van Hunt describes the makeup of himself, basically from dust....then the teasingly slow, seconds of pleasure, where Van Hunt does his best Prince impresenation and scores immediately.
the song, Hello Goodbye starts with a funky guitar groove before breaking out into an uptempo cafe type groove
the classic down here in hell is next and its the best song on the cd, the lyrics are awesome on this jam.
the middle of the cd is what scores...the jams Anything, Highlights, Precious and Her Decemmber, along with down here in hell, give this CD its life...Van Hunt goes off on the lyrics and the music in the background will go platinum as an instrumental release.
The cd ends in a bang with 'who will love me in winter and out of the sky, which continue on the momentum from the earlier songs....Van Hunt, who is probably lumped into the "neo-soul"" category by default, can hold his own in the R&B area with his mellow voice and his unique sound...
I highly recommend this cd, just give it a second look before you declare it as awful like I did.
Free Music Review: The Man Who Would Be Prince Hit: 4 StarsFirst off, this is the album that other neo-soul cats like Cody Chesnutt and Donnie could only dream of making. Also, I don't use the Prince comparison lightly and when I do, I mean it more on the level of versatility and talent than on the level of being a Prince sound alike artist(and there have been plenty of those over the years.) Van is his own man and writes, produces and plays on his own album. He sings great, writes great lyrics and melodies and is the savior of Soul music many have been waiting for. On C.D, he is a soul artist at the behest of his management(Randy(American Idol)Jackson), but live is a lot more rockin'. He is quoted as saying "Hey, Neil Young, Sly Stone, there is no difference to me". I know what he means and I suspect a lot of other true music lover's do to. He means that good(or great) music is not broken down by genre, it is just great music. His best songs are "Down Here In Hell With You", a very realistic look at a difficult but necessary relationship, and "Dust", the first single, which I never heard on the radio, even once. I learned about him through a record review in a magazine, and decided to check him out on the strength of the reviewers conviction and boy, am I glad I did. I have had this C.D for a year and still play it regularly and turn other people on to it every chance I get and now I am trying to turn you on to it. You'll thank me later, the pleasure is all yours.
Free Music Review: The hotness... Hit: 5 StarsVan Hunt is awesome, i had briefly seen a snip of his "Dust" video on MTV. Then read reviews with people like Alicia Keys showing him love. Because i pay attention to detail i noticed that Van Hunt has his hands all over a couple Rashaan Patterson albums with writing and producing. The album is funky with touch of blues and rock.
My favorites:
2. Seconds of Pleasure
8. Precious (i agree with another post on here, very Kravitz and Prince)
10. Hold My Hand
Free Music Review: Great New Artist Hit: 5 StarsI saw this guy on soultrain over a year ago, and his sound was stand out, so I made a point to remember his name and find the album. This is a real artist, producer, singer, songwriter, and musician unlike many of the more popular artist out today. It's a shame He doesn't have or get the noteriety He deserves. He's the real deal, just like Prince. Not too many musicians come around like this. Go get this CD if you're a real music fan and want something real with substance. Help make this guy a multi platinum artist so we'll all get to hear from him again.
Free Music Review: Where Has He Been? Hit: 5 StarsI can honestly say that this CD is ONE OF THE BEST, CD's that I have heard in a very very long time. The man has a voice that would melt Ice, and the music, that is something that if you don't know, buy the CD and find out. He reminds me of a combo of Lenny Kravitz and Sly and the Family Stone. I like every single song, without skipping one. Too bad I have not heard him on the radio, but the world is not ready for VAN HUNT.
