Free Music Notes for Van HuntFree Music Review: Truly good music - Van Hunt shines Hit: 5 StarsBoth of his CDs are exceptional. Why he hasn't gotten more exposure is truly baffling. Out of the Sky is an honest look at celebrity life. Long live the music of Van Hunt.
Free Music Review: Precious is this album Hit: 4 StarsA terrific debut. Van Hunt came out of nowhere and while was in the shadows of John Legend and Amerie, created the best album of 2004 hands down. It's and old-skool styled R&B album with traces of Rock but would be fully fulfilled on his next album. He doesn't wear his influences on his sleeve as obvious as other artists of this modern era do and in fact his voice makes his music really distinctive. He takes a leaf out of the likes of Curtis Mayfield (Anything To Get Your Attention, Her December, Out of The Sky), Marvin Gaye (Precious, Who Will Love Me In Winter?), Stevie Wonder (What Can I Say?) and Prince (Dust, Seconds Of Pleasure, Highlights, Hold My Hand) to great effect. Then he betters it by making two songs that sound distinctly his: Down Here In Hell (With You) and Hello, Goodbye. From start to finish, this album is near perfect. Get it now.
Free Music Review: Van Hunt's self-titled debut creates a lot of heat. Hit: 4 StarsVan has a buttery Smokey Robinson type falsetto that he employs with ease. You can tell this man truly respects his fore fathers. There's a Sly Stone quality present here too, especially the wit and wry humor of Van's lyrics.
The single "Seconds of Pleasure," is very sexy and smooth. 'Down Here in Hell (With You)', in fact is my personal favorite. The lyrics are very clever and I love the subject of breaking up just to make up. There is an absolutely beautiful ballot called 'What Can I Say', dedicated to someone named Millicent. All I can say is she is a lucky woman to have such a beautiful song made for her. Another great cut is 'Highlights' in which Van Hunt stews over a famous ex-lover, followed up by another beautiful love song called 'Precious'. 'Her December' has a hot Latin beat making you think of anything but the winter. 'Who Will Love Me in the winter' has a wonderful down home soul to it, and 'Out Of the Sky' is a great and joyful closer.
Only down is that as beautiful as his vocals are they're a little too high in the mix. Van Hunt could stand to change his vocal style up more and strengthen his voice, this near perfect album can probably becoming a future classic. If you're into sweet soul music with some attitude, smarts and musicianship pick up on Van Hunt if you haven't already.
Free Music Review: So Underrated, people are really missing out on a blessing Hit: 5 StarsThere is much I can say about this man's music. Two years ago a friend invited me to see Van Hunt perform at some bar/club in Baltimore, I didn't not know what I was in store for He and his band put 200% into their performances that night. Van Hunt sang the entire album and he performed so well, he was humble yet confident. His skill of performance mirrors Prince to me simply because Prince gives you an excellent performance and so did Van Hunt. Something special took place that night, because if you didn't know who he was coming in, you were his #1 fan before leaving. I've been waiting for Van Hunt to come and perform in the Washington, Dc area again, he's a must see. I know people read these reviews because they want insight on the actual music on the particular CD. Well from track 1 to track 12 you will not be disappointed at all. When you hear his music you can relate or at least understand the stories. He's singing some great stories on this CD and on his latest CD. Van Hunt should have won some BET, MTV and many other awards. He is a pioneer with his music and his whole style. Just from his first CD, everyone should know his name and face, but they don't. If I could I would treat everyone to this CD because I know you will be blessed. When I want to relax and reflect on things I pop in a mix CD I made with all the songs from Van Hunt's first CD, about 2 Anthony Hamilton songs, 1 India Aerie, and 2 John Legend, lay back, kick my feet up and listen to some music that soothes my soul. The only people I can imagine not liking this CD are people who are kind of shallow and can't appreciate music that's deep and meaningful
Free Music Review: Smooth as silk! A real treat for the ears. Hit: 5 StarsLike M. Woods, a previous reviewer, I did not really get into Van Hunt's music until after hearing the incredibly-sultry "Seconds of Pleasure" during that sexy pedicure scene in the movie "Something New." (Talk about a perfect soundtrack for that scene!!) I had no idea what I was missing; well, better late than never! For want of a better description, Van Hunt's style on his debut album can best be described as "D'Angelo/Prince with an edge." But even this fails to capture the seamless blending of musical styles, melodies and riffs on Van Hunt's album. This album will easily make it into my neo-soul/jazz/funk Hall of Fame, along with the inimitable Jill Scott, Floetry, Sweetback, Remy Shand, and the Brand New Heavies (for those who remember back-in-the-day). I didn't think anyone could measure up to Kem as my favorite soul-jazz-R&B artist, but Van Hunt comes in is a very close second! His debut album is chock-full of good stuff...swipe it up ASAP! Highly recommended.
