Free Music Review: Unique, Appreciative Style Hit: 5 StarsThis CD is pretty impressive. I didn't know what to expect when I ran across it on Amazon but I knew I wanted it and I was most definitely not disappointed! I think the hottest track on the Album, well... ONE of the Hottest, is "Hello, Goodbye" which I haven't heard much of on the reviews! What's up people? Well, anyway "Down here in Hell" is of course a blazin track... but honestly the entire CD is a runthru. Meaning u can pop it in and run thru the entire thing without skipping over any tracks. I think he did an excellent job and I'm really looking forward to another release from him. He is definitely an artist with Staying Power... which we are seeing very little of these days...
Free Music Review: What I've been waiting for Hit: 5 StarsSince Maxwell hasn't put out anything new a bit and I'm always waiting for Prince to blow my mind, I was surprised to hear Van Hunt being played in a bar in Pittburgh while visiting last weekend. I heard his voice poke through the drunken conversations and sounds of bottles clanging together in the trash and thought, "whoa. What is that?" I ran up to the bartender who filled me in and the next day Van Hunt was in my collection. I thought Dust and Seconds of Pleasure were good during the first listening, but wasn't impressed by anything else. Then I heard it again, and again, and I found myself listening to each song multiple times and picking out new voices, new instruments, subtle voice fluctuations and just said "thank you music gods for putting me in Pittsburgh!" I'ven't been this excited about new music in over a year (I got it the weekend of February 18th,'06). I've been singing his praises to everyone who will listen and they all like him too, although his sound is most appreciated by those with the ear to really hear what he's doing with his music. It's not the best produced album I've ever heard, but he gets across the things he wants to showcas. 'What can I say" is touching, "Out of the Sky" reminds me of Stevie but with a street swagger in his voice; same for 'Hello, Goodbye', "Highlights" reminds me of my single days and the crumb snatchers, "Seconds of Pleasure" brings blues off the porch and into the bedroom. It's all good folks. Can't wait for his next album.
Free Music Review: Grown, Sexy, and Free! Hit: 5 StarsVan Hunt's release is a timeless classic. So different from the sad rest;yet once I placed it in my cd player, I immediately felt comfortable with his rare grooves. A must have for the grown, sexy and free!
Free Music Review: Smart AND sexy Hit: 4 StarsI've had this album for over a year, but I realized that I never took time to write a review. I'm gonna make a point of doing that for all the music that I appreciate. Anyway, Dust is up for a Grammy. I suppose that's some recognition, but not nearly enough. Just imagine if he got just a quarter of the props John Legend gets.... I'm not begruding Legend's success, but Van Hunt's album is actually better and he's got a way better voice. It's so smooth and sexy. Rowrr! I think the musical comparisons to Stevie, Prince, Sly, Marvin and Curtis are not totally without merit. Game recognizes game and Van Hunt's got plenty of game. The influence of those legendary artists is evident, but he's his own man. The scary part is, I'm sure there's better music to come. Imagine that.....
As you can tell I'm seriously loving this cd. I'll be waiting with baited breath for his next cd, however long it takes, just like for Sade. Just like for Teena Marie. I hear his next cd is due out April 4, 2006. I'll probably buy it without hearing a single cut. I'm that confident of his musicality. He plays actual! musical! instruments! I know his lyrics won't be trite and banal. Now I would be terribly disappointed if he changed up his style and went straight for commerical r&b success. That would be a shame, because his music is so much more than the derivative r&b. (I'm talking about music which consists of wrap-around hooks masquerading as melody. Save that ish for Usher.) Van Hunt's music is r&b, blues, rock, jazz perfectly melded without categorization. Because Van Hunt's music defies categorization, he has fallen by the wayside. The radio program directors have to have everything so neat and tidy. Take a chance! Stop sleeping on this artist.
