Free Music Notes for Astral Weeks Live At the Hollywood BowlFree Music Review: Wonderful Music! Hit: 5 Stars
There is no album as moving and beautiful as Astral Weeks. There is no artist who has moved me the way Van Morrison has. I have everyone of his albums. I first got Moondance in 1990 and Astral Weeks was the second album of his I purchased. Hearing Astral Weeks live was always a dream of mine - I have seen Van live 5 times and always hope that he will play songs from this amazing album. I have seen him do Sweet Thing but nothing else. I was willing to pay a lot of money to travel to NYC and see the concert but was not able to. This album is wonderful. His band is terrific and Van still sounds amazing. I don't think there is a real middle ground with Van - for people who truly know his music, he is an artist without peer. I can't wait for the DVD.
Free Music Review: A Legend Delivers an Incredible Performance Hit: 5 Stars
Truly a concert event, Van Morrison finally has the chance to perform the 1968 release, Astral Weeks, with full-orchestration and with an artistic confidence that makes for one of the greatest live albums ever released.
Recorded on November 7-8, 2008, at the Hollywood Bowl, Morrison breaths incredible life into the folk music, jazz and poetry from his first release on Warner Bros. Records. And as the producer, the listener is given a front seat to the performance; there is not the post-production "tweaking" that turns live material into essentially studio cuts through over-dubbing.
Morrison paints an impressionist soundscape with words and music in a setting that is nothing short of perfect for his vision.
Free Music Review: Fantastic version of a legendary album! Hit: 5 Stars
How in the world this ever went out of print, and so soon at that, is far beyond me. The original was sublime. This one is sublime on steroids. Doesn't make sense, but there it is. Bought this on vinyl as a teenager, after liking Moondance so much. One song and I decided I had wasted my money, put it on the shelf, and didn't quite forget about it. Over the years, I would try to listen to it and never could get through more than 2 or 3 songs. Now, I swallow it whole, like an elixir. Don't know enough about music to comment on what's great about the music. Lyrics don't always make sense at first listen. It takes me back to a place I've been before in my mind, and in a very pleasant way. This version does that and more.
Free Music Review: Van's the Greatest Singer now alive, and he shows it Hit: 5 Stars
Van is just in a class by himself now that Ray Charles is gone. Take the time and get to know one of the world's great treasures while he's still alive.
Any Van live performance is riveting, and this one doesn't disappoint. Astral Weeks sounds great and Van's new take is worth the price.
My only disappointment was the packaging (it was just a cardboard sleeve. What happened to a jeweled case?)
Don't let that stop you though. If you know Van Morrison music at all, buy this CD. If you don't, listen to one of his more accessible albums (Moondance, Into the Music, Avalon Sunset, Down the Road) first. Astral Weeks is a challenging listen for the inexperienced.
Free Music Review: Better with Age! Hit: 5 Stars
WOW, He might not like being famous but Van has released a truly magnificent re-release of this classic album. His voice is so smooth and has only matured like a great whiskey with age. I love all the songs but really enjoyed the bonus song, "the lion roars". Even my young daughters loved it and i feel proud that i have now contributed to another generation of van lovers. The VM orchestra is harmonic. I'm sure Van makes them perform to high standards. I have had to now order the DVD to add to my large VM collection, can't wait to see it. Also looking to buy the other VM DVD's too. He will always be considered as one of the music greats and his music should live forever! What a Legend!
