Free Music Notes for Astral Weeks Live At the Hollywood Bowl

Free Music Review: Old is New Again
Hit: 5 Stars

Not many re-do's make sense. They are often a re-hash of the original and gain notoriety if the artist happens to stray from the the chords or words or arrangements.

But Astral Weeks Live At The Hollywood Bowl makes perfect sense. Think about it - how long ago did you first start listening to Astral Weeks? And isn't it a little different each time you dig it out and play it again? Aren't there notes, nuances and newness that weren't there the last time you listened? It sure is that way for me.

So now Van decides to re-visit this masterpiece AND records it at that hallowed place called the Hollywood Bowl. And it is new and different again. Thanks Van!

Free Music Review: How great is this?
Hit: 5 Stars

I discovered Van the Man when he appeared on The Last Waltz and very rarely looked back. (Keep It Simple was a big miss in my opinion but maybe it will win me over someday.) I actually had never heard Astral Weeks - I was aware of it but never felt like giving it a listen. So it is beyond thrilling to hear the 2008 live version. I actually had chills during much of this CD. Fantastic late night driving music. He has never sounded better. The orchestra is superb. Good grief, he is smiling on the cover! I am totally infatuated with this CD and it will stay on my player for a long time. At the moment, I can't imagine anything good enough to knock it off.

Free Music Review: The Magic Remains
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm listenening to the CD right now, and just had to write this. I had no idea 30 years ago when I first discovered "Astral Weeks", at the tender age of 16 (therabouts) that I had fallen in love with such a classic that would endure the test of time. For 30 years, if anyone would ask me what my favorite all-time album is, without the slightest hesitation, my response is always the same: "Astral Weeks". This version is just as intimate and awe-inspiring as the original. Of course, when you are truly a Van Morrison fan, his music just has that effect on you. I only hope he brings this show to Boston. To see it live would be the icing on a very tasty cake!

Free Music Review: Great CD
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this for my husband, who heard it at a party. He loves it, and has been listening to it over and over. It is a 2008 live recording of an album that was recorded 40 years ago. Van Morrison is still rockin after all these years! This cd comes through in such a way that can only be had by years of experience of life. It is richer and more full-bodied than the original. Hubby says it's best listened to with a drink and cigar at hand...good friends make it even better. (Of course, this is only if you are old enough for that sort of thing) The man sings and plays for himself...if you don't like it, your loss.

Free Music Review: The Voice
Hit: 5 Stars

Van is an artist with a long history, a variety of skills and a number of styles. He's written some fine songs, given some electrifying performances, and made a wide range of recordings. For me, it's always been about his his powerful, expressive voice. More than his writing or his persona, the voice communicates the anguish, the fury and the wonder of Van's music. His singing on this recording is better than most of what he's released in several decades. His voice is strong, he sings like he means it, and on songs like "The Way Young Lovers Do," it makes your hair stand on end. A wonderful recording.
