Forty-some years of honing come through on this CD. With little rehearsal, we're told, Van's spontaneous genius is front and center with his well-crafted and pleasing orchestration to enhance it. I love the Van's subtle mix of hard edge and sweetness. It all sounds natural and effortless, not affected or forced.
If you are a confirmed fan but have been waiting in recent years for Van to give us another masterwork, in my opinion this is it - an old classic album recreated into something fresh and original, a classic-to-be in its own right.

41 years ago in Chicago, I visited a record shop looking for a new Miles Davis album I'd heard about, In a Silent Way. The guy at the counter gave me a shrewd eye, and asked if I'd heard about Astral Weeks. I knew Van but not this record. He insisted that it would bookend Miles nicely. And it captured me, captivated me. A lifetime later, Astral Weeks Live comes to carry me into the rest of my life. And when he surprised me, and sang: I have transcended", I wept in the car, my heart bursting, it's true, I have been transcended. I was at the Hollywood Bowl show. It was so poorly attended that the staff had to move people down from the cheap seats to the boxes in order to make the place look full for the cameras (I'm glad I bought cheap seats). The staff put up a row of potted plants above the boxes so you couldn't see the empty half of the Bowl.
The DVD is out of print and the original issue CD is still not remastered in the US.
Mr. Morrison - why don't you treat your loyal fans better - maybe they'll treat you better.

I saw both concerts and Van's vocal performance and engagement with the material were both amazing. He didn't try to imitate the original versions of the songs, just updated for forty years later and it was chilling and thrilling!! Alone among the 60s legends, his voice is intact and powerful. "Beside You" and "Slim Slow Slider" perhaps excel the 1968 versions. Now we have two Astral Weeks and I'm loving it! And soon a DVD! Can't Wait!Free Music Review: Fabulous *live* revisit of a classic

A must-buy for Van Morrison fans. A should-buy for anyone else.
This is a mature revisiting of Morrison's classic album, performed live, where the naivete of the young man's album is performed with the mature man's nuance.
Technically, the recording does a great job of capturing the live performance. Hard to do at best, but difficult indeed for an artist like Morrison.
