Free Music Notes for Astral WeeksFree Music Review: Astral Weak Hit: 1 StarsYou'd have to be an absolute idiot to enjoy this. It doesn't even have Brown Eyed Girl which is the only half decent thing Mr Morrison ever did. And what sort of name is Van? Stick to Ronan Keating for that bit of Irish soul.
Free Music Review: He just caught it out of the cloud floating by... Hit: 5 StarsWith great art like this, it is nearly pointless to analyze the quality of the songs, or the meaning of the words. Someone said this is music of a particular time - that time being the 1967-68 period when the Summer of Love turned into the Long Bad Trip. Astral Weeks transcends the time, but it's as good a guess as any that Van caught these thoughts in his net as the cloud bearing them floated by. It is so dense, so personal, so real, that if ou pay attention you can smell the wet wool of the schoolboys' coats as they traipse in to visit Madam George.
For an American parallel creation, check Love's Forever Changes - another particularly haunting tho much, much darker collage of impressions gathered from the collective unconscious of that time.
Has so-called popular music produced two finer achievements since? I'm stuck as to what they might be.
Free Music Review: Do I Hear Six Stars? Hit: 5 StarsMy cousins are all signifigantly older than me and as soon as they found out that I was "into" music they were trying to get me to listen to this album and yet for some reason I just never did. I felt that if I really wanted to listen to it, I would.
Well, the days of vinyl gave way to digital and I was probably about 28-29 years old and I saw this recording just laying on the store's counter. I remember holding the old album cover as a kid at my cousin's house. It felt familar even though I had yet to listen to it so I ended up buying the CD. I thought that if I really hated it I could always return it.
From the very first song to the very last song I was mesmerized. I really didn't think that this would have much of an effect on me, but it did. It felt as though it was welcoming me into a private little mystical world. After listening to it the first time I excitedly called my cousin to tell him of my great "discovery".
When I told him, he just laughed, "I knew that you'd listen to it someday..."
If you have yet to listen to this CD make that someday today. This recording puts the "class" into classic. It's deep, it's powerful, it's hauntingly familiar and it'll seep down into the very marrow of your bones.
Free Music Review: I need a new one for Christmas. Hit: 5 StarsAstral Weeks is the first CD that I actually wore out, so many listens over the years. I hope Santa will bring me a new one. You cannot say enough about this album. The only album in my collection that is its equal is Requiem by you know who...Mozart.
Free Music Review: Astral Weeks Hit: 5 StarsAstral Weeks is my favorite Van Morrison album. The rough edges, the acoustic instruments, lyrics, all of it. This is the best album available to test speakers with. The sound of each instrument is just incredible.
