Free Music Review: HEY MR DJ!PLAY SOME R&B MUSIC ON THE RADIO...ON THE RADIO!

Already basking in the bright musical light of both his Astral Weeks and Moondance the now happily married Van Morrison was looking to reconcile his spiritual quests with the music of the Earth. And the music of the Earth was not necessarily anything raw and gutteral but bright,elegantly produced soul. Always a hugely poetic figure the romanticism in Morrison's music is working overtime on every song on this album. Musically it's completely based in soul. Sometimes it's soul music itself and other times it's a type of music that speaks to the soul but isn't within the structure of the sound itself. Songs such as "Crazy Face","Virgo Clowns" and "Gypsy Queen" are more lightly jazzy folk-pop which is part of Van's sound anyway but don't exactly sound like the rolled off the Stax/Volt review. Now for a more direct channeling of that sort of musical sound of course there's "Domino". Now this isn't a precise imitation of American Southern soul. Nothing about Morrison's musical vision would ever allow something so imitative. It has this light jazzy drumming flavor and even some a very genuine tribute to the mid/late 60's Motown rhythm style. One of the most amazing songs here is "I've Been Working". Now this is a churning,sophisticated and raw James Brown styled rhythm guitar led slice of funk wherein Van belts his heart out vocally on a lyric that actually is very close to a Luther Vandross song of the same title released a decade later. The song also has a very strong Stax styled gospel soul flavor to it too that's very much in keeping with his vision. Other songs such as "Call Me Up In Dreamland","Gypsy Queen" and especially the driving "Blue Money" all maintain a strong sense of funk as well but with a more obvious British rock style rhythm & blues style-although put through the Van Morrison music blender that somehow adds his own stamp to everything he does. The final two songs "If I Ever Needed Someone" and "Street Choir" really deliver heavily on the churchy Otis Redding style Southern soul ballad. Now in many great moments after this Van Morrison would continue variating on this basic sound again and again but he seldom shined with it as brightly and as magically as he did on this particular album.

Van Morrison's 1970 release His Band and The Street Choir had a more relaxed sound than its predecessor "Moondance." This release was just one of many critically acclaimed releases for the equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild eyed poet sorcerer.His Band and the Street Choir appeared at a time--1970--when Van Morrison was building on the great critical successes of Astral Weeks and Moondance. His third Warner Bros. album contains a number of radio-friendly tracks clearly aimed at the singles market and few clues of the serious, brooding melancholy of Astral Weeks. Kicking off with the jaunty "Domino," the album is generally dominated by uptempo swingers such as "Call Me Up in Dreamland," "Give Me a Kiss," and "Blue Money." The cover photography and liner notes by then wife Janet Planet reveal a smiling Morrison and hint at a newfound personal contentment. This mood did not last long after Van left the artists' community of Woodstock. But even here, in "I'll Be Your Lover Too" and "Crazy Face," there are moments that are essential listening for fans of his sullen splendor and mysticism. --Rob Stewart
