Free Music Notes for Magic Time AlbumFree Music Review: Van Music Hit: 5 StarsDepending what side of the fence you're on with Van's yearly album you might consider this a wonderfully consistent album filled with everything Van has been about for the last fifteen years or so. There are echoes of his No Guru era with great flashes of well-produced sax and harmonica and his vocals are mixed stronger than any in a long time. Van's voice is front and center on this one, as the music seemed to be on his Blue Note release.
There are some nice (3) up-tempo blues-rockers like Evening Train and we haven't heard this type of song from Van in a long time.
I'm not a big fan of too many of his big-band crooning songs but there's several here also, as is his lighter-type AOR songs that would fill a library from about the mid-eighties on with Van.
Which ultimately leaves me in the same state as I have been in with Van for a good ten years. His albums have been musically perfect, his vocals are often the finest instrument among them all, he consistently and redundantly challenges very little with his "I'm confused about my place in the universe" lyrics juxtaposed with songs dripping with starry-eyed sentiment, and inevitably it becomes a chore to find enough strength to listen top to bottom to his albums much.
While I always initially think this is finally another great Van album with the energy, passion, and creative spark that lit such albums as Inarticulate Speech and No Guru, it usually settles into another Van on Auto-Pilot fulfilling a workman-like annual contract. His songs about mediocrity and how the industry sold him out etc. seem particularly ironic as they are mixed into tunes as mediocre and repetitive as any he has ever written.
