Free Music Review: Morrison Outdoes Himself! Hit: 5 StarsWhen I began listening to Van Morrison in the 1970s, I thought there was no better music. Thirty years later, Morrison released his best music yet. It is relevant and melodic in times when music is not always at its best. If you are a Van Morrison fan, this album is a must-have!
Free Music Review: Van is the Man Hit: 5 StarsHe's the Celtic Johnny Cash, the Bard of the Emerald Isle, the slightly rumpled and grumpy neighbor with the twinkle in his eye, magic in his heart, and the cosmos in his brain...Van Morrison is too punk to be called comforting and too full of grace to let anger have the ultimate triumph. His visionary-but-quirky commentary on the human condition--or on the beauty of a sunset or the tastiness of mussels--coupled with his highly individualized voice, brilliant phrasing and timing, and lushly gorgeous instrumentation make him not only an Irish treasure but a truly global one. On MAGIC TIME, Van's umpteenth album release, he alchemizes a nice fusion of his ASTRAL WEEKS era dreaminess with his AVALON SUNSET/HYMNS TO THE SILENCE era melodicism...and the result is pure sonic gold. "Celtic New Year" is an instant and winning classic...iconic in imagery and delightful in atmosphere. "Keep Mediocrity at Bay" is a nice kick in the pants, a credo, and a sharp, swinging bluesy rocker all at once. Van wears his heart on his sleeve better than anybody in music today and "Just Like Greta" is a prime example of how and why it works so well for him. Van hasn't exactly been in a slump with his past few albums, all of which have their outstanding moments. But with MAGIC TIME, Van the Man has reclaimed his rightful spot on top of the mountain.
Free Music Review: ROMPING AS ALWAYS Hit: 5 StarsVAN HAS ALWAYS LOVED THE MUSIC HEARD OUT OF HIS RADIO, IF YOU DON'T GET A FULL ASTRAL JUMP FROM HIS TAKE OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG, THEN MY FRIEND YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE AS TO THIS MAN'S AWESOMNESS,AND THEN THROW IN SOME SUPPER-CLUB NUMBERS BY HIS MANY IDOLS. ENJOY!!!
Free Music Review: Very good although it might dissapoint hardcore fans Hit: 5 StarsVan Morrisons music always strikes me as someone who is homesick, when he was in the USA he wrote about green fields and childhood memories of Ireland, now that he's firmly back in his motherland he writes about...the same thing.
Anyway that is one of the charming aspects of Morrisons style, that kind of Celtic spirit that permeates. This is pretty much another one of those although in my opinion a cut above some other recent efforts. I like the tracks Just Like Greta and The Lion This Time Again. Of course being Van Morrison he has superb musicians backing him and the guitar contribution is particularly outstanding. For hardcore fans who wait with baited breath for what the man will do next it is probably a case of all too familiar, for those vaguely interested you might find this exceeds your expectations.
