Free Music Notes for Magic Time

Free Music Review: More Lion, Please
Hit: 3 Stars

The album's highlights are "The Lion this Time", "Just Like Greta Garbo", and "Evening Train", all of which are poetic and bluesy in the way only Mr. Morrison can be. There's not really much to complain about elsewhere, but it's a bad sign that Van Morrison is being compared to Chamomile tea (see Amazon review above). Back around the time of Them, Astral Weeks, and St. Dominic's Preview he was more like strong coffee served black.

Free Music Review: Mediocrity Not Kept at Bay
Hit: 2 Stars

I realize I'm swimming against the tide here and that I will soon have more negative votes than a porcupine has quills. But I dislike "Magic Time" a great deal. Simply put, listening to it seems to take too much time and not provide enough magic.

Between the harmonica-infused songs that smack of Parchman Farm, the cheesy strings that zap life out of the arrangements on others, the lackadaisical covers, and redone do-wop dullness that permeates several others, little remains to praise other than say Evening Train.

Van Morrison has the right, certainly, to make any kind of recording he damn well pleases, but once he set the bar on "Poetic Champions Compose" it's a shame he didn't follow the advice he dispenses in the third track here, Keep Mediocrity at Bay.

Free Music Review: Nice Enough
Hit: 3 Stars

Van is soulful, tuneful, in tune, and always easy on the ears. He's been a lot more than that, though, and if you haven't heard his two really, really 5-star albums, Astral Weeks and Veedon Fleece, or his many 4-star albums (Moondance, Tupelo Honey, Into the Music, Hard Nose the Highway among them), then by all means start there instead.

Free Music Review: As Good as he has ever been
Hit: 5 Stars

Van Morrison continues to be an incredible songwriter that explores all types of music genres, this is perhaps one the best examples of his versatility, and his heartfelt, sensible sentimental "going down and taking names", the Man may be in his 60's, but he rivals all of his peers, and is the one of them that has kept the magic of his earlier creativity in his recent
songs. Every song on this CD rocks, how often does that happen?

Free Music Review: Magic IS the word
Hit: 5 Stars

By rights, Van shouldn't be making records this great so far into his career, the law of diminishing returns being what it is...So few rock musicians keep their muse, their artistic mojo,intact...But this is just stellar material, chock full of that patented, ecstatic Van magic. And,if you're susceptible to that particular brand of magic (and why wouldn't you be?) you cannot go wrong with this.
