Free Music Notes for Magic TimeFree Music Review: What is it with Van's fans? Hit: 2 StarsWhen the Man's on form, he's one of the greatest artists in the biz. But, let's face it, the quality of his large catalogue is pretty up and down -- albums that are brilliant, almost from first to last, interspersed with mediocrity.
Trouble is, he has a knack of attracting fans who WON'T face it. To judge from the reviews on this site, a lot of rose-colored headphones must be being worn when "Magic Time" hits the CD deck. Morrison has always liked to think of himself, at heart, as just a jobbing musician, and "Magic Time" sounds like it was motivated by nothing more than a belief enough time has passed since the last one, the market can bear another piece of product.
There's no soul in it. The whole thing feels perfunctory: arrangements that are lifeless, original songs and riffs that are retreads of earlier work; covers that are a waste of space. There really is no point revisiting a hoary old standard like "I'm Confessin'" unless you're going to turn it upside down, shake it by its boots and make it new. Even Van's singing comes across like too many of the Knicks' games -- as if what's REALLY on his mind is where to get a jar and a bite to eat afterwards.
Skip this one.
Free Music Review: Wow Hit: 5 StarsIf you like Van Morrison then what else can I say...this is honestly one of his best works, not to diminish from others he has made. He may sound the same (or we would not like him) but this is just so refreshing. If you are tired of what other music is on offer at the moment, tired of listening to the same old same old get lifted and have....at least.... a listen to this one. I believe in diversification in music and listening styles, from this genre both Van Morrison's Magic Time and Tony Joe White's Heroines are the best in their category. I am so happy with this CD in my vast collection.
Free Music Review: Still , One of The Very Best Hit: 5 StarsSensitivity , charisma , good music and lyrics , always with the times and space . Magic Time fills me with Hope and Joy in a World Gone Mad ( We are all Animals anyway ... ) Just keep on Van and we will all be happy to Be ... Enlightnment is where is at , it's up to you , What do you Think ? ... Well , we know what I think ...
Free Music Review: Ho hum... Hit: 1 StarsI wish Amazon.Com let us vote on CDs with negative stars. Maybe one or more Black holes? This collection of songs is such a horrible disappointment, it calls for a black blot as an option. So, in the absence of black holes, I write this to warn others who love Van Morrison, but who don't love *everything* he ever did.
This CD is a snoozer.
I think he's tired. There's just nothing here. Compared to "No Guru", "Enlightenment", "Moondance" and those wonderful discs from the early 80s, this breaks no musical ground, slaps you with no especial joy or astonishment, and generally bores you to inertia.
For example: Sometimes, in his writing and recording, Van sets a problem, and then in the next song, he solves it with a flourish. Like "I'd love to write another song" (from "Avalon Sunset") which is bouncy but vexing. Then... ah, then, he swoons us with "Have I told you lately..." Problem -- Solution. Wow. He does that. But not on this disk.
It's sad. My last Van Morrison purchase was that double-album set, "Hymns to the Silence" which proved that not every genius is a genius all the time. It was a huge (and expensive) disappointment. And I add this: not every Van Morrison album has a reason for existence. "Veedon Fleece" or "Into the Music". Not my cup of tea.
So, since it's *just* my opinion, I close with this: If you, like I, have happily worn out your copies of "Poetic Champions", or "No Guru" or "Inarticulate Speech" or "Beautiful Vision", or if "Enlightenment" really grew on you, duck this one, and take your money and buy "Bothy Culture" by Martyn Bennett and dance your little legs off.
Just my opinion, but you've been talked-to by someone who has definite tastes in Mr. Morrison's output.
Free Music Review: Magic time: Herb McNeill Hit: 4 StarsA very good production, performance and recording is well done.
Having been a Van Morrison fan for 25 years he has done better. Nothing spectular on this CD but is worth a listen to.
