An earlier reviewer panned the album and said that basically 'only long time Van fanatics could like this album'. I am here to disagree and give my experience, which contradicts that view.
I was a teenager in the late 80s and had never heard of Van Morrison other than one live song on the "LIVE FOR IRELAND" compilation CD("Here Comes The Knight"). After hearing it, I decided to check his stuff out. At the record store an 'older guy' was there, obviously a Van enthusiast, and when he saw me looking at Van's music he pointed out several CDs to get as an introduction to Van's music.
I bought "Astral Weeks", "Moondance", "No Guru, No Method, No Teacher", and "Poetic Champions Compose". I didn't like "Astral Weeks" at all but LOVED the other three.
"No Guru, No Method, No Teacher" was one I immediately liked, though my appreciation for it has grown over the years. Right off I loved the Irish bent of "Tir Na Nog" and "One Irish Rover". "Here Comes The Knight", "Ivory Tower", "In The Garden" and "Foreign Window" were favorites too. "Thanks For The Information" was a good track too, but it's just now (20 years later!) that I am really starting to 'get' that song!
There isn't a bad track on here. The mood is somber, nostalgic, magical, spiritual. It is beautifully played, arranged & recorded. Van's voice is a good and the lyrics will still offer new insights years later.

Universal. 2008.Longtime Van Morrison fans may prefer the Belfast bard's tougher, emphatically R&B-driven work, yet it's his lusher, mid-'80s output that helped him consolidate the scrappy gains made in the prior decades. The once-heightened polarity between the earthy and the ethereal seemed muted on albums that traded in a softer-focus, romantic mysticism mirrored by the expanded scale of Morrison's band and arrangements, and left room for him to dabble in instrumental compositions or his renewed love of sax and piano. No Method, No Guru, No Teacher proves among the more durable, convincing chapters in this era, carrying a now-familiar array of symbolic touchstones (the Celtic legacy of "Tir Na Nog" or an extended instrumental allusion to a hymn set to William Blake's musings on England) and offering two of Morrison's better meditations on redemption, "In the Garden" and "A Town Called Paradise," which echoes the fevered waltz-time trance of "Astral Weeks" itself. --Sam Sutherland
