Free Music Review: A nice recording from Van Morrison's early era.

This is a 1971 recording, so is from Morrison's "early period," around the time that albums such as "Moondance" and other classics came out. The problem with reviewing any of Mr. Morrison's albums is the fact that he has set such incredibly high standards of songwriting brilliance from those very first few albums that anything that doesn't achieve that level seems subpar. So, let me clarify the four star rating. It's important to remember that this is a relative rating compared to other Van Morrison albums. This is a very, very good album. If just about any other artist created an album with such solid songwriting, it would be hailed as a "masterpiece." However, it's simply not as strong as some of his other recordings and, hence, does not warrant a five star rating. If you are new to Van Morrison, you should probably start with the Greatest Hits disks (both Vol. 1 & 2), or the awesome live recording "It's Too Late to Stop Now" (unquestionably one of the greatest live albums ever recorded). I'm not usually a fan of greatest hits albums, but after 30+ years in the music business, Van Morrison has produced a vast body of work. If you're specifically looking for early VM, I suggest you start with "Moondance," or "His Band and the Street Choir." And don't overlook some of the later recordings. I feel that the 1999 recording "Back on Top" is every bit as strong as any of the "classic Van Morrison" albums. This is the closest Morrison came to country and the San Fransisco sound of the 70's. He's as good as ever. Although not his best cd, it shows how good he was in the 70's and that 90% of his cd's are better than any other thing in the market.Free Music Review: At the Very Top of His Game

Interesting to read several reviews downgrading this collection because it's not quite up to "Moondance" standards. How many albums are? This is Van at the top of his game, without a bad cut on the record. Wild Nights still rocks after years of radio overplay and TUpelo Honey will make a grown man cry. Morrison's voice is as emotive and soulful as any in the business and this is as good as it gets. (I wore my vinyl copy out as a sophomore in college.)Free Music Review: Not On The Same Level As Moondance

Don't get me wrong. This is a good record. However, Van's style does not add anything new that is not on Moondance. Wild Night is a great tune. Very bouncy with loads of grooves. Definitely one of my all time favorite songs by the man. Tupelo Honey is a pretty song most elevated by the instrumental embellishments. It is a little long after almost seven minutes of the same chord progressions but none the less it is filled with beauty. Moonshine Whiskey is another standout track with its changes in rhythms and strong singing. And I love the country styled guitar playing on When That Evening Sun Goes Down. In general, there is not a bad track in this nine song batch. And I really like that Wild Night number. However, this batch just is not as memorable as the ten from Moondance which is a classic in its own right. I guess the songs have slightly less hooks which makes them less memorable.However, Van is one talented man and fans of this man should get this release. 3 1/2 stars sounds right to me.

Every song on this cd is great. I didn't really like Astral Weeks as much as this. Tupelo Honey is probably Van Morrison's 2nd best album, the 1st being Moondance. If you are thinking of buying this as your first Van Morrison cd, and get this, then you have to get Moondance to go along with it. Get it if you don't have it
