Free Music Notes for Van Morrison At The Movies: Soundtrack HitsFree Music Review: The Power To Engender A Sense Of Wonder Hit: 5 Stars
"A few months ago a friend of this reviewer opined that Van Morrison must have made a few bob from the music that has been used on film soundtracks. The release of this album seems to vindicate that opinion. Of the nineteen tracks, seventeen are from feature films, one from the documentary of The Bands historic last concert "The Last Waltz" and to trap the Van Morrison completes who maybe thinks they own everything the man recorded, a previously unreleased live version of the classic "Moondance", the original of which featured in "An American Werewolf in London". Hmm, messing about with the concept there, I think" Derek McCann
'On February 22nd, 2007, Van Morrison is to be honored at the Second Annual Oscar Wilde: Honoring Irish Writing in Film Pre-Academy Awards Party, in Los Angeles, California for his contribution to over fifty films. He will be presented with the award by Al Pacino. 'Van Morrison at the Movies - Soundtrack Hits',is a new nineteen song album, that was released by Morrison's record label Manhattan EMI on February 13, 2007 to coincide with this event.'
All the hits are here: Gloria, Baby Please Don't Go, Jackie Wilson Said, Wild Night, Wonderful Remark, Brown Eyed Girl, Bright Side of the Road and Have I Told You Lately. There are a few interesting touches, like the live versions of Domino, Moondance, Into the Mystic and Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, which is from the movie, The Departed'.
The songs are all his, and meant to be remembered. This is a toe-tappin', hand clappin', dancin' on the ceiling type of CD. The best of the best is here, and for a Van The Man, Morrison fan, this is a must have CD.

Free Music Review: Great music to my ears ... Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a huge Van Morrison fan since my early twenties. I started buying all his music until 'The Healing Game'. I stopped there because he was releasing an average of 2 albums per year, and my financial status was becoming at risk. I am not a fan of compilations at all. I just bought this CD in a whim and I still don't know why. I may have all the songs in here except for a couple, but the quality of every track is excellent. There is not one single song that is not good. Perhaps the Pink Floyd song is helping selling this compilation a lot, since it appeared in 'The Departed', in a very interesting moment in that movie. I already had it in the 'The Wall' concert of Roger Waters in Berlin, but anyway ... This compilation may help getting a good overview of Morrison's music to those who still don't know him. It would also be a great asset in every CD collection of pop music. This compilation includes the THEM hits 'Gloria' and 'Baby Please Don't Go'. Also comes with the 'Brown Eyed Girl' super HIT. If my ears don't lie to me, I'd say these are remastered tracks. They really sound absolutely wonderful to me! The 'Moondance' live version included here is not the best I know. I like the studio version or, maybe better, the Live track included in his Live in San Francisco double album. This CD comes with an article by Michael Heatley where he tells us the movies these songs appeared in. It also includes credits for every song (no lyrics included), and a small portrait of Van Morrison (yes, with his hat on!). I would recommend this CD to anybody who would like to discover Morrison, or to have a very interesting collection of some of his best well-known hits. Then, if you like it, you can go ahead and try to get a collection of his top 10 best albums from Astral Weeks to The Healing Game. Maybe this is not a CD for those Van Morrison fans who may have all these songs already. Thanks for reading!
P.S. If you find my review helpful, vote YES (It does not mean you agree. It just means you found it helpful). You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them.
Free Music Review: Best Single Disc Van Morrison Collection Available! Hit: 5 Stars
If you are in the market to own just one Van Morrison CD collection, Van Morrison "At The Movies", is the disc for you. This cd combines 19 tracks from all phases of his long distinguished career. The Irish soul man has never sounded better with remastered clarity, that makes this the choice over "Greatest Hits Vol-1 & Vol-2. This cd actually combines the best of those two collections and more. His classic gems from the "Them" days "Gloria", and "Baby Please Don't Go", are included here as well. His reworking of "Brown Eyed Girl", proves he has not lost anything from those vocal chords. His live take on "Caravan" from the "Last Waltz", is one of the finest live recordings ever. Lots of modern gems here as well, like 'Days Like This", "Real Real Gone", and the "Bright Side Of The Road". The real treat on this collection however, is the inclusion of his collaboration with Pink Floyds Roger Waters, on "Comfotably Numb", which was recorded live in Berlin in 1986 and features Rick Danko and Levon Helm. Some outstanding ballads are here as well like, "Someone Like You", "Have I Told You Lately", "Wonderful Remark", and "Hungry For Your Love". Considering the price and the fantastic content of this cd, I consider this cd essential to everyone who is both new to Van Morrison music and to well seasoned fans who would like to add a career retrospective not available until now. It doesn't get any better than this.
Free Music Review: For A Quick Fix Or A Broad Overview Hit: 5 Stars
Since I don't watch many modern movies, I was unaware that any of these songs featured in one. But even though I had heard and already had on CD most of what is on At The Movies, I decided to get it anyway because I wanted to hear the few live cuts I hadn't yet heard. Yes, I've read the complaints in the music press about Van getting lazy by issuing yet another compilation but its my view that you can never get too much Van Morrison.
I like the whole CD with the exception of Wonderful Remark which I never cared for. Beyond that, what you get when you buy this is a handy and quick Van Morrison fix when you just can't decide which of his albums you want to hear. Van newbies also get a broad overview of his career which touches on the first three-quarters of it. I won't say these songs are the highlights of that career because most aren't, but with the exception of the one I don't care for I would say that they are all good and worthy examples of Morrison's songcraft.
Long-time fans might ask if the few live songs are enough to make you want to open your wallet. Well, at this price and the amount of music you are getting, what are you waiting for?
Free Music Review: Can't lose with Van Hit: 5 Stars
I confess. I haven't heard this compilation but I've heard most all songs on Van's other albums and CDs. Van Morrison's songs just lights up any movie, always, without fail. One song that is missing from Van Morrison At The Movies is "I'll Be Your Lover, Too" from Proof of Life, a beautiful, haunting, unmistakably Van Morrison song that I had not heard at that time. On searching [...] for the Proof of Life soundtrack to identify this song, more comments (14 or 15 out of 23 comments) were made on that one song (which is not on that soundtrack), with people asking who was that, where can I get it? Again, Van's songs in a movie always hits the spot, even if the movie sucks. His tunes, however, are the perfect touch to an entertaining movie: who can forget "Bright Side of the Road" in Michael. After John Kennedy Jr died in the plane crash, I saw a pictoral tribute to John Jr but it was put together with "Into The Mystic" and it perfectly captured the many emotions. We are incredibly fortunate to be graced in our time by this brilliant, genius musician-poet. Incredibly he's been doing it for 40 years. He IS the MAN! Amazing.
